So ... the verdict is still out on the lens ... the pictures seem fine, but I'm not seeing a huge difference between it and my normal lens ... which makes me believe I'm doing something wrong, lol.

Those are awesome! ?Is new lens for close-ups? ?I noticed that the close ups were really, really nice and clear, and it seem too focus on that object/baby and kind of blur the background. ?Is that right or am I totally talking out of my butt???

Nope, that's what it's supposed to do!  It's a portrait lens, and does not have a zoom or autofocus

Sweet! ?So it really is doing what it is supposed to - I had no idea, and you're pictures look AWESOME. ?Great job! ?I sooo need to learn more about my camera. I will take pics without the flash on occasion, but normall just auto focus and go ?

I have a D40 and I just got my portrait lens - 50mm F/1.8 lens. Today was the first time I used it

Wow...the pics look really good. Thanks for the info., I will definitely need to look into one of those since I love to take portrait type pics of the kiddo.

The 50 mm lens is a great all purpose lens for either canon or nikon.  It's also really inexpensive (unless you get the 1.2 version and then it's $1200!)  But you can get 1.8 for about $300 and there is a plastic version for like $99.  Great lens for a great price!

Trotty....you said you aren't seeing much diff. between this one and your old lens.  Are you shooting manual or AF?  My guess is that your f-stop is too high....so you are not getting as much bokah (the blurriness) in the background as you would like.  Can you look at the details of the image and tell me what the settings were?

Yup.  I have a Nikon D40 ... and my new lens is the 50mm 1.8.  The picture above was taken with it ... and the lens is manual focus only with my camera.
