Hi! 2nd trier - questions about playards

Hi! I wanted to know what you all thought of playards and if you got a lot of use out of them. I am asking because the one I want is pretty expensive  and I dont want to spend the money on it unless I will be getting a lot of use out of it. How soon do they outgrow them? Thanks!!!

Re: Hi! 2nd trier - questions about playards

  • Play yard meaning a pack and play?

I used the pack and play a lot.  DD slept in it at the beginning (the vibration feature was great) and still sleeps in it when we travel.

  • We used the bassinet and changing table part of our Graco every night right at first. I would have used it longer, but DS started to try to crawl up the side. So then we took the  bassinet insert out of the top and he wouldn't sleep in it at all. I would put him in there to play sometimes, but he hated that too. If I had to do it over again, I would have just gotten a regular bassinet and skipped the play yard all together.

  • Yep, a pack and play with a changer is what i meant. The one I am looking at is just called a playard. At what age do children usually outgrow them? thanks!
  • If DS had liked it, he would still be able to sleep in it when we went on trips and stuff. He is 2. I really hope that DC #2 doesn't mind sleeping in it.

  • My DD refused to sleep in a pack 'n' play (while we were traveling) after she was about 6 months.  We had to switch her to an air mattress.

We never used it as a "play" space.

However, I hear about some kids who will still use it for sleeping away from home at age 2.

  • DS slept in his for a few weeks but his little baby noises kept me up all night so I moved him to his crib and we rarely used it after that.  But it was nice to have when we'd go visit family or had friends visit us and they had a small baby.  My sister watched him for a few months and used it for naps.  We probably have only used it a handful of times since he was about 8 months.

ETA:  I would buy it again and will also use it for #2.

  • Jayden used his until he was almost 2. That was when he started climbing out of it.

  • We got a ton of use our of our pack and play; DS slept in it for the first 4 weeks, then I would put him in to nap occasionally.   From 7-15 or so months, we used to keep toys in it, and when I was getting ready for work or needed him occupied, he was always good to play in it.  I dont put him in it to play anymore to play b/c I am pretty sure he could cause damange trying to excape, but at over 2 yrs he still sleeps in it occasionally when we travel somewhere and it was definately worth the money.  He naps in one at day care as well.
  • Thanks for the advice, seems like it could go either way... maybe I will just get a reasonably priced one rather than the splurge... ;)
  • DD is 2and a half and still naps in one every day at work.
