worried about growth scan i just had - could use some opinions/experiences

hey ladies,

up until this point my babies have been on the smaller side (they went from 50th to 40th to 30th %iles, roughly speaking, from 20w-32w.)  but they were always within a couple ounces of each other.

today, 34w5d, they were estimated at a full pound apart.  he has rocketed from 28th to 57th %ile, and now appears to be 5lb 6oz.  she however, has slowed even more and is now 20th %ile, at 4lb 6oz (3 weeks ago she was 3lb 9oz.)

i was all worried and even started crying, and the tech was like "you are fine, go home" basically which is always nice.  (she did also do a doppler study and took a look at the umbilical cord and bloodflow to the smaller baby.  all looked fine.)

luckily i have an appt with my primary OB in a couple hours so i will discuss this with him at some length.  meanwhile i am just wondering what you guys think about this, how worried i should be, if at all, and how far apart your babies were estimated, etc.

thanks so much for your help.

  • Mine were always measuring apart. Lilly even had a due date three days after Molly. USs are NOT perfect- not even close. The weights they give are esitmates, the babies could be much closer in weight. It's possible he has a larger head, or longer legs which is making him measure bigger. I would honestly not worry about it.

  • Hey hon!  I have been thinking about you.  If they let you go home, I wouldn't worry about it.  They are so cautious at that hospital, that for every minor thing, they a) contact the doc immediately or b) send you over to triage so if they didn't do that, I would tend to believe they are comfortable with the weights.  What time are you going today?  Ill be there at 130.  Any chance in seeing you?

  • I think if the cord and fluid look good on your little girl, then it's probably just that she's just a little bitty thing. But also, u/s are not as accurate at this stage. If the docs were truly worried, you wouldn't have been sent home. I hope your OB can ease your worries, though.

  • Don't put too much into the U/S. All along they told me that mine were within a few ounces of each other. When they were born, Baby A was 5lb14oz and Baby B was 4lb 5oz. Small, but healthy.
  • Mine always measured apart.  Baby B measured smaller than Baby A by almost 11oz at my final sono before delivery.  Baby A was born 5lbs5oz and Baby B was 6lbs1oz so the measurements were clearly off.  The u/s measurements are just estimates.
  • thank you so much for sharing your advice and experiences - i really appreciate it :)  you guys have made me feel a lot better.

  • One of mine measured a pound more than the other two for quite a while - and came out that way - but she was fine and in fact the smallest one (Morgan) who was only 3lbs 4oz at birth was the first one home - quite an eater! I really wouldn't worry. If there was a real problem they would not have let you go home!
  • I think you are fine and you are so close to making it to 36 weeks that you can start to relax.  Take it from a severe IUGR momma!  Those are really great weights and if their breathing looks good in the doplar and so does the blood flow you will be fine.  Think positive things.
  • Ditto the pp - I think your little ones are just fine. U/S measurements are not exact, and you've done such a great job getting them this far that you really should try not to worry.  My boys measured pretty close throughout the pregnancy, and were born at 5 lb 11 oz and 6 lb 5 oz - a much bigger difference that they thought, but both perfectly healthy.  Baby A is still close to a lb smaller than his brother - he's just got a very different build.

I hope the OB is able to put your mind at ease - you're really doing so great Gretchen!!

Honestly Gretchen, I wouldn't worry too much.  The weight guesstimates can be off a bit.  Plus, I don't think a size difference is as worrisome in fraternal twins.  I think the main thing they care about at this point is that they are both still growing.  My girls were really close sizewise all the way through until 35w5d.  At that point I think the were measuring about a pound apart.  However, the reason they were concerned and decided to deliver me the next day was because B hadn't really grown since the u/s 2 weeks prior.  As long as she's growing and the blood flow and fluid look find, I think you're in good shape.  The mantra I tried to live with was if the docs/techs aren't worried, I wasn't too concerned.  Good luck!

  • ultrasound weights are estimates and this late in pregnancy, are harder to do because of how cramped things are getting in there.  The tech is right: do not worry.  Maggie and Ryan did the same things your two are doing.  Ryan picked up towards the end, Maggie slowed down.  THey were estimated at over a full pound apart in weight, which is still fine.  The est weights you were given are great weights.  My two did weigh over a pound difference at birth, but neither had any problems whatsoever.  Sounds like your babies are doing great.
  • At my last growth u/s (32 wks) mine were 14 oz apart.  The doctor said that it isn't something to worry about, it's just the baby saying "watch me" so they'll be keeping a close eye on her, just as they had been doing (I have weekly NSTs, BPPs, and dr. appts.).  I totally trust my dr., so I'm not too worried.  Just make sure you bring it up with your doc at your next appt., or give him a call if you aren't due in for a while.
