Baby Names

For those on team blue...

Are any of you seriously considering naming your DS after DH? Before we even found out what we were having, we had two boy names picked out.... Preston Alexander O**** and Brandon George O**** II (DH's name). Now DH is totally set on naming our DS after him. Everyone that I have shared this info with claims that naming him after DH is lazy and that we should give him his own name.

Re: For those on team blue...

  • Our first boy will probably be a junior.  H's dad is a junior but his parents didn't continue it, and I think that's kind of a bummer.  I really like the tradition.  It helps that my H has a name I love.
  • DH wanted a junior but we compromised and gave DS his first name and a different middle name. DH has FIL's fn and different mn, so in the end we started a nice tradition of honoring dad (and granddad) but avoiding Jrs, IIIs, etc.

  • If DH really wanted a junior, I'd be okay with it.

What we'll likely do, though, is name a future son after DH's dad (who is the III).  That way it would be after both DH's dad and grandpa.  We'd likely use a different middle name, though (from my side).

  • God no. DH has one of the most common names out there, it's been in the top 10 on the SSA since probably the beginning of time. Not to mention he hates his name, which would squash the idea even if I liked it.?

I actually hate the practice of naming sons after fathers. I can understand maybe the same middle name, but I think making sons juniors and thirds is just lazy and egotistical. Unless you come from a long lineage of that name (and that pretty much leaves everyone out but royalty) it's just silly. ?

  • We never considered it. We would rather he have his own identity rather than a lift time of "Little whateverthenameis" or "Whateverthenameis Junior"  We don't understand the whole idea of wanting your son to have the same name as you. European royalty started the tradition, but "normal" Europeans never practiced it and now actually think it is silly that Americans do it. For some reason, Americans earlier this century decided it was cool.

We have some in our family (cousins,) so I understand that in many families it is a tradition, although I can't really figure out why... it is always confusing re: who someone is talking about/ to.

  • We're considering it. I told DH if he wants to do it, we should use it for this baby's name... however, he disagrees... he thinks the firstborn gets everything anyway so it would be good to give a 2nd boy (if we have one) his name. Our DS would go by his middle name.
  • I didn't want DS to have DH's name (neither did DH) because we feel DS is his own person and should have his own name. Not to mention my inlaws would have LOVED it WAY too much =)
  • i'm still ttc but dh really wants a II. i would NEVER do that to my child, but i know so many people who are very into it. i think it's important that if you do it, you have a nickname that you call him that is unique to him so he is not always known as "so and so's son" or grandson.
