We are trying to decide whether or not to bank the baby's cord blood once she's born. I need opinions to maybe help us decide what to do. Why or why aren't you banking cord blood? TIA!
when interviewing our pediatrician last week, he totally encouraged it. aside from being a really good insurance policy, that sealed the deal for us. keep in mind that you can often be put on a payment plan.
I am going to donate. Private banking is ridiculously expensive on a social level. It cost between $5.7 and $12 Million dollars PER USE. Public banking is more like $50K. If everyone public banked and donated just 5% of what they spent on private, there would be no need for private banking.
It is free for me to donate, though I can only donate if I give birth between Sunday at 3:00 and Friday at 3:00 due to the lack of funding for public donation. Also, make sure your doctor will donate their collection services. Mine does.
we talked to a lot of friends who work in genetics etc...and they gave us some reasons why they wouldnt....so we decided based on cost..we wouldnt do it
After discussing with my Dad (a pediatrician) his partner who specializes in pediatric hematology/oncology and my OB we've decided to donate. The consensus was that the cost/benefit ratio was upside down at this point. For what it costs and the chances of your sample being viable (there is no guarantee that your sample will be bankable) and the fact that there is no way at this time to amplify the cells and limited uses at this time it was better to donate. Hopefully this way someone will benefit from those cells.
I SO wish that we could donate, but they don't do it at my hospital. I think after a lot of reading and research and countless polls of friends and strangers, that we're not going to bank. I hate that the blood and cells will go to waste, especially if it can potentially go to good use, but from what I've been told, the expense outweighs the benefits. Thanks for your help, everyone!
we banked our baby's blood with the cord blood registry. we saw it as added insurance for the health of the baby they are pricey but in the big scheme of things, the yearly storage fee is minimal. We also rest easier knowing that if we ever should need it we have it available. Checkout www.thecordbloodregistrymom.com for information on CBR, their payment plans and how to apply the discount code for $250 off the fee. Take care
We decided to go ahead w/storing my son's cord blood. We felt like god forbid something happened to my son we would regret not saving his cord blood. Viacord & CBR are very expensive. Fortunately, we found Neo Cells. They are very affordable & have free storage for a yr. The reason we also picked this company vs the others was their location. Their laboratory & storage facilites are located in Chicago, Illinois, & Paramus, New Jersey. They chose these storage sites for many reason including safety from environmental disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, etc.. Nothing is too expensive when it comes to my kids health. It's the best desicion we made & $$$ well spent. We plan on storing our daughter's Isabella's cord blood as well when she arrives this September.
If you have any questions or would like to refer us feel free to contact me.
A boy got treated for cerebral palsy w/ stem cells from cord. Apparently, that is a current application along with leukemia and diabetes. After seeing this and speaking with our Obgyn we decided to go with CBR. I found an online discount coupon M1998 and got $250 OFF fees. Total came to just under $1,900 for everything. The only additional cost going forward is $125 for annual storage fee.
But it's ultimately your decision to make. It's a shame your hospital doesn't support donating to a public bone marrow bank.

Thought I'd share this story from Today Show that made me finally decide to bank. https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23572206/
