How old should child be to use a shower?

Alex is 7.  8 in June and he's starting to hold his breath underwater during his bath, which freaks me out (when your kid gets older they bathe themselves alone)

So do you think he's too young to shower?  I don't think I showered til age 11.

  • I started showering around 8.  I would take a bath, then rinse off using the shower.  I still had help (wasn't allowed to adjust the temperature, mostly).

  • My daughter is 10 and she takes showers about 95% of the time. She has been taking showers sice she was about 8 because that is what she liked. Many kids seem not to like showers untill they are around this age because they don't like getting water in there eyes.

  • Luke is 11 and he has been showering since he was about 8, but it was his choice to do so. He still occasionally takes a bath and then rinses off in the shower afterwards.

Have you told Alex that it worries you when he does that and why? It might help.

If he resists doing the shower route, and he won't stop the holding his breathe bit, I would suggest getting something to make showering cooler. New, special shampoo, a shower mirror, or shower radio. I have a shower clock radio that you can have if you want.

  • Kiah is 7 and has been taking showers by her self for at least a year! She washes her own hair and drys it after she gets out of the shower. But she is use to it because of swim lessons.
  • When I nannied the boys were 7 and 9, and they showered on their own. I would do the water, set out towel and made them keep the door cracked open. I promised to be downstairs, but wanted to hear, in case something happened.

  • I havent really thought about when my boys will shower alone but they actually only shower now (of course with one of us in there with them or in the bathroom with Eli) I have never given either boy a bath since thier first one in the hospital. Its just much easier to shower with them. Eli tkes showers by himself now with me sitting outside the tub on the toilet and I just ash his hair and body for him, although he already triesto do it on his own.

I guess maybe around 5 he can start doing it himself with me checking out his cleanliness owrk before he gets out.

  • My boys are 8 and 10 and they shower. They started showering about a year or two ago. Granted the younger one was around 6, but since his brother was older and doing it he wanted. And the funny thing is, the younger one is better about taking a shower, remembering what to bring in the bathroom with him, knows how to turn the water on all by himself and had to teach his brother how to turn it on lol! We showed them how to several times and still go check the temp as well. But I think it really depends on your child. And if you have two that are close in age and the older one starts to, be ready for the younger to want to also.

Our daughter is 5 and she wants to already since her brothers do, but we told her she has to wait until she starts Kindergarten. And then we will help her out because I don't think really that she is all ready for it yet. But they just grow up so fast and see their siblings doing things so they want to also.
