PT? Pull-ups or underwear?

DC suggests that we bring her in underwear and they will deal with any accidents.  My sister (who has PT'd 2 kids) says this is a really bad idea - that accidents really upset kids.

DD is going occasionally, but we really haven't 'started' to much at home. But want to now.

Re: PT? Pull-ups or underwear?

  • Pulls Ups did nothing for DS.  He treated them like a diaper.

  • I think it really depends on the kid.  When I first put DD in underwear and she had a bunch of accidents, it really upset her (but she was very young, closer to 2 than 3), so we went back to diapers and finally pull-ups (when she grew out of her cloth diapers).

Now that she's older, the accidents in her underwear don't bother her the same way.

I'd try the underwear to see how it goes.

  • I think underwear is more effective since it helps them notice the accidents and gain a better understanding of what it feels like to go. But Pull ups was the one thing that really got DD interested in PTing (I think because her classmates use them) so pull ups it was for us!

  • That's WHY it's a good idea - they have accidents, they don't like it, they don't go in their pants anymore. (that's the general theory anyway)

With pullups, it's the same as a diaper - they absorb so much of the pee that the kid never feels uncomfortable and wet.

  • DD wore pull ups for naps and bedtime  the 1st week. She decided that she was ready for underwear all of the time. She did fine.
  • We tried both.  Pull-ups did nothing, she treated them as diapers, but we couldn't put her in panties to go in public.  At home and at grandma's (who watches her 3 days a week) she'd go naked from the waist down.  That was the easiest way for us.  She'd wear pull-ups at daycare and we never had any luck there.  Just last month we stopped using them and put her in panties all the time (unless she's home, she'd still rather be naked most times).  She had a couple accidents at daycare but other than that's she's doing great.  We tried doing panties at night this past weekend as she'd been dry at night for a few weeks, but it didn't go well so we'll probably wait and try again in a few weeks.
  • We skipped pullups and went right to undies.  She was pt'd at 24 months and I actually think the accidents helped us along even quicker.  GL!
