taking temp..help

hello! my mom said when taking a temp in a specific place you are supposed to add a degree but can't remember where...rectal or under arm. is this true and where is that??

In the NICU they did not add a degree and they took it in the under arm.  I am curious to the responses...

a rectal temo is as real as a temp can get, so i'm pretty sure that you add the degree for the armpit. ?HTH

I'm pretty sure you add a degree for the armpit as well. Like PP said rectal temp is as accurate as you can get.

It's definitely the armpit that you add the degree to... I just had this conversation with our pedi's after hoursl nurse yesterday.

I'm pretty sure it's under the arm as well.

One thing to keep in mind....if you are measuring it, I would write down the location, time and actual reading of the temp w/o adjustments.  Our ped's office wants to know the location taken and the actual temp without adding anything.
