Preemies

Still no teeth!!!!

He will be one a week from tomorrow and he still has no teeth!!!

When did your preemie get his/her first tooth?

I am especially interested to see responses from moms of fellow micro-preemies or babies born between 24-28 weeks. I keep looking and I don't even see anything under his gums. This kid will be gumming his food like an old man until his 2nd birthday!

Re: Still no teeth!!!!

  • My 28 weeker got her first tooth at 13 months (actual).  She got 3 more in the same day about 1 month later.  She is now 16 months old (actual; ~13.5 adjusted) and she has 8 teeth - 4 top and 4 bottom.  She may very well be working on more right now based on her behavior/sleep.  It is amazing how fast they came once they started!

I guess I won't be of any help Sad  Waylon has 10 teeth, 6 on top, 4 on the bottom.  He got his first teeth (he cut 3 in one weekend) at 8 months actual, 5 months adjusted.  His pedi said that if the parents cut teeth early then so will your baby.  It's a "hereditary" thing.  Apparently I had 6 teeth by 6 months, so that theory would hold true for us.  I hope he gets some teeth soon!!!!!

My niece was born at 26 weeks and cut her first tooth at 13 months. ?Like you, my sister thought she was NEVER going to get any teeth! ?Then, boom! ?There they were. ?I think (if I remember correctly) they came in pretty quickly after that)

I'll have to ask my husband what his track record was. :)

My history is of no help because I had a ton of teeth by the time I was one. I also walked at 9 months. I did everything early. Maybe DH was a "late bloomer".

  • My 28 weekers will be one in two weeks exactly and still no sign of teeth.  But they drool and have been very fussy this week, and both have horrible oral aversions but have been putting things in their mouths on their own and tolerating the OT work. Maybe some are just around the corner.

I love this board.  Its so good to know we're not alone and that other people are in the boat with us on so many issues.

I agree 100%. I am sick of people going he's almost one? He doesn't have any teeth? He is not walking? What do you mean he isn't even crawling yet?!

Then I start in with the, "he is almost one, but he should really only be 8.5 months old". That always prompts the "well, if he is supposed to be 8.5 months old my kids were crawling by then". <insert sigh here>

I don't get mad. I don't even get sad anymore. I am fully prepared to deal with the fact that he will most likely not walk until 2. The only reason I know this is because all of the other 24 weekers on this board didn't walk until then so at least I have a goal in mind....walking by 2!

  • Max has no signs of teeth any time soon either... I told DH to think about all the dentist money we'll save if he just never grows teeth! LOL

  • My DS was a 26 weeker.  His first tooth (2 actually) popped in on exactly his first bday.  It actually was a good thing because he was off the bottle when his teeth came in so I didn't have to worry about that.
