TTC After a Loss

How many cycles did you wait post D&C?

Hi ladies.  I am new to this board so I will give you a little background.  I am the proud Mommy of a 2 1/2 year old daughter (not one pg complication...) and had a missed mc early Feb.  The baby was due on my birthday and our children were going to be 3 years apart - perfect in my mind.  Well, at 11 w4d I went in for the first trimester screen and they could not find a heartbeat - needless to say we were shocked.  I had a D&C the following week and just got my first AF yesterday.  I also had a dr appointment yesterday and recieved the information that the chromosome testing on the baby came back 100% normal.  (which makes it harder in my mind...now I will never know what happened)  I asked the Dr when we can TTC again and she said after my first AF (at an earlier appointment) and said after 2 AF's yesterday.  I mentioned what if we got pg this cycle and she said it would most likely be OK.  So, I am just wondering what your Dr. said?  I was thinking we could just wing it this month and see what happens.  Please share what your Dr. said!  Thanks.

My OB said it would be better to wait one cycle, but it would be ok if we got pg before that. I waited one cycle so that I would not freak myself out about dating the pregnancy, betas, u/s, chemical pg fears, etc.

  • I am so sorry about your loss.  My doctor said at my d&e appt that we could ttc again "in two months", and I'm not sure if he meant two calendar months or two cycles.  I haven't gotten my first post-d&e af yet, and my followup appt is this coming Wednesday.  I will ask for clarification then and am REALLY hoping he says I can try as soon as I get my first af.  From what I have gathered from other posts on this board, the majority of people start ttc again after their first af, and people who are told to wait longer are told for either some specific medical reason (late loss, etc.) or because the doctor is concerned about the person's emotional health.  Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  Welcome to the board...the girls here are a wonderful form of support!

I had a m/c at 18 weeks...dilated early and my water broke, so I had a D&E.  My dr considered this not a "typical" m/c, so we went through several tests to find out what went wrong.  Everything was fine with the baby, but for whatever reason my cervix opened early.  Because of this circumstance, the dr recommended not getting pregnant for 9-12 months, so we could decrease the risk of that type of m/c happening again.

My situation is obviously different than yours, but I've read that after a first trimester m/c, women should wait two cycles before getting pregnant again.  To give their body time to heal and have a regular cycle.

    Good luck!

  • I don't have any advice for you, but just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss.
  • I also had a late loss at 18 weeks.  I was induced, delivered the baby, and then had a follow-up d&c in the delivery room.  At my two-week follow-up my doctor said my cervix was back to normal but to wait three cycles (counting the m/c one) before we started trying again.  She said it was to give the uterine lining a chance to get back to normal.  I've heard this in other places as well.  I haven't had my first period yet (pretty sure I just ovulated though, so it should be here in 2-ish weeks), but I figure we will wait at least 2 cycles.  I'm going to worry through my entire next pregnancy no matter what, but if I can alleviate one source of fear by waiting a few cycles, I'll do it.
