100.3* in armpit - worthy of urgent care?

I'm freaking out! This is our first fever, miracoulously, and I don't know what to do.

My guys have had a nasty head/chest cold for almost 2 weeks now. Drake is pretty much all better, but Leo is worse than ever. He's super congested, he's a bit wheezy (not terribly though) and he just now started running a fever. I haven't given him any Motrin yet, but I'm about to.

Should I take him to urgent care?  I feel so clueless right now :(

Re: 100.3* in armpit - worthy of urgent care?

  • Does your pedi have a nurse advice line you could call?

  • I was told anything over 102 for the boys age and weigh. Not sure for 1yr old. Give them tylenol and check again in 45 min. Try a room temp wet cloth over their heads. Keep them on light clothing. ?After the 45 min if the same or higher then I would take them. The part that would concern me would be the wheezing. The fever is a sign of infection, the wheezing could indicate that they may have a resp infection. ?Keep us updated. Hope is nothing and they feel better soon.

  • I was typing that up as I was waiting for the nurse line to call back..... H is taking him to urgent care, poor little fella :(
  • that's not really a high fever.  Many docs say not to call unless it is 101 or higher a that age- but if you feel he's really sick otherwise - then maybe - if breathing is an issue, etc.

btw- I didn't realize you have a Drake!  That was our other choice for names with Griffin - it was between the 2 and we waited to see him and see what he looked like- and decided he looked like a Griffin (we didn't even realize he had red hair then- so we picked well!).... but I still love the name Drake! good choice! :)

    hope

  • Unless something else is wrong or your gut is telling you that something is wrong I would not take them to urgent care based on the temperature alone.  My boys have had fevers of up to 104 and I haven't taken them as long as the Motrin/Tylenol is bringing the fever down.  But, 100.3 isn't high at all for a baby.  Good Luck!

  • sorry bout that- the nest farted and won't let me delete :(
  • I would see what my on-call ped would say to do. The fact that he has cold systems, worries me of RSV. I'd call and see what the doc would say to do! I know our doc said anything over 101, but she told me to call and check regardless.
  • Give him some Tylenol or Motrin and put him in a luke warm bath, fever should go down within 30 min. Babies get much higher fevers than adults. I wouldn't really worry unless it was high 101's.
  • Under the arm always measures low.  If you can, I would try to get a rectal temp.  If its 102, yes, urgent care.  If he's wheezy, he could have bronchiolitis or something.
