C&P: the moral of this post is:

I can't believe this many people have eaten a deer !!!!!

WTF?!

I read this thinking OH sweet fancy jesus- somebody conned the poor girl into eating a woodland creature! I expected all of the replies to be like Oh my god! That is horriffic! but instead they're like " I like deer meat." As though it were a FOOD- that people just ate-not because they were stranded in the wilderness, or stuck in the game the Oregon Trail!!!

AND- she said she saw the package in the trash- the PACKAGE?!? you can buy a package of deer meat?!

ho boy.

  • I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. ?

I know people do eat deer; my cousin is an avid hunter and I know his family eats it. ?

    But I can't eat Bambi. ?Can't. ?Do. ?It. ?

  • Lying to someone about what they're eating is a sh!tty_thing to do, but I can't help but think that she's totally over-reacting. If you don't want to eat venison fine- but citing a Disney cartoon for the reason is kind of lame IMO.??Wonder why "Chicken Little" didn't have the same effect on people- he was a cute little bird too, LOL.?

  • I live in AL, sh!t like that is normal. Bambi, Thumper..... all of their little friends and neighbors. I don't like it but I hear it all tastes like chicken.

  • I have a tree farm and game management is part of it. The density in the area that it is in is increasing rapidly and there are lots of recreational areas, so if we don't have someone hunt it, then all the deer from the area end up on our land, which would be fine, but there is not enough habitat for them, so the heard becomes weak, they get hit by cars because they are forced to feed in higher density/traffic areas, they become sick, ect.  If people have to kill it, they might as well eat it.  It doesn't bother me.  I haven't had it in a long time, since I don't personally like to hunt, and tricking someone into it is obviously mean, but it isn't any less humane than eating Joe Bunny or a pig.  Pigs are super smart compared to deer, and we eat them all the time.
  • Her husband was down right mean to serve something to her that he knew she really didn't want to eat.

I had Venison served as a starter at my Christmas wedding. My Mum insisted that we have it so I agreed. I refused to eat it. I just couldn't bring myself to eat a deer especially at Christmas!! Stick out tongue LOL.

I couldn't eat Rabbit, duck, deer, kangaroo...ew...yet I have no problem eating pig, cow, chicken. Funny that...maybe it is a Disney thing!!

I haven't eaten meat since I was 16 but ITA with this.

And Cleo - I am what is referred to as a 'beady eyed vegetarian' b/c I eat fish.  Chickens have beady eyes too.  Those big eyes are what sends people over the ledge ;)

  • I live in Florida and deer meat is food here...lmao :).  I tried it once years ago, but never again.  I just think 'Bambi'.

BUT I also no longer eat chicken, beef, pork.  I do eat some seafood, though.

  • I'm from MI, venison is pretty common.

What's with the deer, though?  I hate those things...they eat your gardens.  And I hit one with my car once, it was over $1000 damage.

DH ate dog once when he was stationed in Korea.  Guess that wouldn't go over well around here either.

  • I have eaten it and it is really good - doesn't taste like chicken though.  My family hunted when I was a kid and we ate it all the time - didn't know you could buy it in the store though.  The only time recently I've had it was five years ago at an expensive fancy restaurant DH took me to for our first wedding anniversary.  Deer meat with some kind of pear sauce was served and I wanted to do back flips it was so good.  It was raw too and supposedly that's how you're supposed to eat it.

I don't go out and hunt bambi but if someone gives it to me, I'd eat it, poor thing is already dead so what are you gonna do?  Not eating it isn't going to bring it back to life.  May sound disturbing but....

ditto. Is this just another dig at backwoods people from the midwest? Deer 'hamburger' is way leaner than most hamburger.

Cows too.  Let's not forget the cows!!

  • Totally agree with Joebunny on this one. Over population is a huge issue in some areas. My family hunts and although I'm not a venison fan or a fan of hunting, I see the purpose to control the population. Also, every year my dad's hunting group donates some of the meat to the local food shelves.

  • Oh, and, most people that have deer meat have it bc someone hunted it, not bc they bought it at the store. It is only morally right that if your hunt, you eat what you kill, so as it is more than sport. As joebunny said, population management. I'm not sure if you are thinking these deer are raised to be slaughtered like most cows, or whether you think deer meat is coming from being hit by a vehicle on the side of the road or what. It is and animal just like a cow. Wait... Iguess here is KS there IS a waiting list to collect deer carcasses that have been hit. ;)

  • Just an FYI, but when you hunt and kill a deer, you take the carcass to a butcher for them to process.  They in turn, package the meat in butcher paper and print the name of the cut of meat on the package.

I agree, if someone doesn't know how to cook it, it can be really gamey tasting.  I prefer deer sausage that is about 40% pork and add some jalapeno to it.  It is very good.

I'm much more concerned that she said she "ait" a deer.
  • mmmm... deer sausage. Maybe I can buy some from my cousins who hunt. So yummy.

And of course it's in a package, who has raw meat sitting loose in their fridge/freezer???
