Going out to eat?

When you go/went out to eat with your little ones in their infant seats, did you ask for a table for 4 or a booth for 4?  Did you have any trouble with it?  I was talking to a friend of mine who is a hostess in a local restaurant and she said that they will not allow "extra" seats for babies since they aren't eating.  I never even thought of this so I am wondering what you all did/do.

Re: Going out to eat?

  • When the boys were small enough to be in the car seats, I would just make sure we got a booth and I would sit with one baby and DH would sit with the other...it always worked out pretty well for us, as long as you didn't have to wait too long for a booth!
  • I answer there are four (two infants) and let them seat me accordingly. It makes no sense to seat a baby in a carseat on a chair. So no problem for me if they give me a table for two and two high chairs.

But they should offer two highchairs -they nestle the car seats well and it gets them out of people's way.

  • i would never go to a restaurant that wouldn't allow for extra seating! I have never heard of such a thing!!

We always got a booth that would seat 4- just for the 3 of us.... it would have been the same for 4 of us.... was never a problem.   now DS is in a high chair and we still ask for a larger booth so we have room to keep plates away from his reach, etc.

  • I never had a problem with them either giving us a booth or finding 2 high chairs where we could park the infant carriers.  They always gave a us a table with adequate room for the 4 of us with no hassle.  Although - with 2 babies we always tried to go to family friendly places and we'd go early when it was less crowded.  I can see where a fancier restaurant might balk at giving up a 4-top in prime service time, but they should still accommodate you.  If that's the case - calling ahead and letting them know you're bringing 2 infants would probably be appreciated.  I've never heard of them not "allowing" extra seats for babies.
  • We don't go out much, but we haven't had a problem so far.  My only word of advice is to not always ask for a booth.  We went to a restaurant and they gave us a booth b/c car seats ALWAYS fit in them, according to the hostess.  Well not our car seats!!  It was actually a 6 person booth so we just put the car seats on the table, but we would have had to move it it was just a 4 person booth.

  • Your friend's restaurant is very short-sighted! Which restaurant would you go back to - the one that gives me crap about my "extra" seats or the ones that accomate me with a smile and realizes that my kids will get bigger and eat their food eventually?

I have never heard of such a thing and I've been out to eat with my BFF's twins plus my DD (so table for 5 and only 2 real meals and one kids meal purchased). Of course it's not like I'd take a baby or toddler out to dinner at dinner rush either.

  • We've done both.  If the hostess gives us a choice we always say "booth" just because we can push them in first and we know they are protected from "touchy" people.  But we also go to a diner for Sunday breakfast and we sit at a table for 4 since the booths are smaller and they are very accomodating (granted we are regulars there so it's like family).
