Depends on why you need it. If you plan to SAH and just use the pump on rare occassion to relieve engorgement or whatever, a single pump is fine. If you' re planning to pump at work and need to get as much as you can get, you'll need a high-power double pump.
Most women will recommend the Medela Pump InStyle, Aveda styles or the Ameda Purely Yours. I, however, didn't like these. I had the much less expensive, but powerful, First Years pump. Not even sure if they still sell it. But I pumped for my son for 14 months and never had a supply issue.
Most women do register for it. You might not get it, but it's worth a shot.
As pp stated, it depends on the frequency of use. I pump 2-3 times a day/4 days a week. I needed something that gets the job done quickly. I have the Medela PISA metrobag. I've been really happy with it.
I did not register for it. I waited until I received a Babies R Us coupon for 15% off and bought it with that.
I didn't buy one until I delivered, and DD was clearly having problems BFing. I bought a Medela Pump in Style (a double pump). LOVED it. I had to pump and give her a bottle of my milk for the first 2 weeks, and I can't imagine having a single pump for that.
If you're going to SAH, you may not need an expensive double pump, but if you're planning on going back to work, I've heard they're definitely the way to go.
I ended up buying it myself... seems like people want to purchase cutesy things not the practical things! I'm going to be pumping at work so I opted for the Lansinoh double electric pump. So far it has been a great pump and has gotten great reviews, plus its like $100 less than the PISA.

I bought the Lansinoh double electric. I pump at home and at work, and so far it's been great. It is also much cheaper than most of the other electric pumps. I purchased it myself just bc I thought it would be weird to have someone else buy this for me.
If you plan to be pumping often (every day or even every other day), I'd get a double electric pump. I used the Ameda Purely Yours and bought it myself online. A pump is a pretty expensive gift, and it almost would feel too personal to register for. Besides that, I don't think you can buy the Ameda in stores.

Like the pp, just depends on how often you'll be pumping. I waited to buy mine until after DS was born b/c I had 6 weeks before I had to return to work and was going to BF until then. Well, DS was early and too small to latch/suck properly so the LC had be pumping in the hospital so I could feed DS colostrum via a syringe. We had to continue this until my milk came in so we had to buy a pump on the way home from the hospital. I would recommend getting one before I did so you already have it in case of BFing issues.
Check with your insurance about whether they cover one. Some do. I would register for one and then plan on buying it yourself if you don't recieve it. I have the Medela PISA and I love it. I got it on clearance at Target for 150 during their January clearance. If you get one before delivery, don't open it and make sure you can return it if your milk doesn't come in.
I work part time and couldn't imagine not having a double electric pump. My friend loves her Ameda purely yours.
For DD#1 and DS I had the Medela Pump In Style Original double electric. Worked great, DD never latched, so I exclusively pumped for a year and the pump held up well and again to use for DS. I decided to buy a new pump for DD, and this time I got a Medela Pump in Style Advanced. So far (only been two weeks), I really like it, much better that my PIS original. I did register for my pump when I was pregnant w/ DD #1, but ended up purchasing it myself off of ebay, it was new in the factory sealed box, and a lot cheaper than from BRU or Target.
