Nurseries and Baby Gear

Any one use dark oak/maple older furniture?

Here's my dilemma-

We are adopting and the costs associated are high.  I am trying to be frugal in my approach to a nursery.  I have inherited several pieces of good quality furniture from the late 60s.  I am uncertain the type of wood but it's stained (and veneered...joy!) a medium to dark wood stain with a golden undertone.  I am sure you've seen this same furniture at your grandma's house!

I am not thrilled w/the pieces but we have two dressers, hutch, and twin bed frame.  It would be huge cost savings to use the pieces and work around them.

I was hoping to see pictures from a nursery that uses older furniture that's not been painted.  Anyone?

OR- has anyone been successful stripping and refinishing such pieces?  How much work is it?  Some have told me that it takes forever.

Thanks!

  • If you have 60's furniture it would look perfect with all the mod baby bedding out there.

Mine is light oak but no pics yet. Will post when the furniture arrives.

  • My aunt just did this to save money too.  She used her stuff from when she was a kid that my grandma still had.  It looked great!  She did not repaint or refinish it.  She used it in its original form.  She had a little girl and did a cute mod/retro bedding set with dots/spheres around the room.  I vote save the money.  You might have unexpected costs when your child comes home.  Good luck!
