Breastmilk supply question....

Okay, I'll admit I had a low supply of BM when ds was born and so I gave him formula. Now that I'm prego again I want to & pray that I am able to BF for as long as possible. I think I might have given up too soon with ds. A friend of mine who had a baby 3 mths ago said what helped her was drinking lots of milk before & after her dd was born. Is this true, will that help milk supply? What about fenugreek? Or do I just have to nurse more often? thanks any advice will be appreciated

Re: Breastmilk supply question....

  • Milk won't do anything for your supply, but certainly the added protein is good for you while you're pregnant and while you're nursing. Fenugreek is a godsend for lactating mamas. Here's a link on it: https://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html. Please note that for it to work, you need to take much more than the label will recommend. You and your baby will also have pee that smells like maple syrup. LOL!

Also, be sure to talk to a lactation consultant -- now and immediately after your child is born. LCs are a wealth of information. Your hospital probably has LCs on staff to help you.

  • I would just try to let nature take its course early on and stay away from supplements unless you really find you have a problem. Drinking milk is fine, but nothing magic - keeping well hydrated is really the key. Other than that what you need to do is let your new LO nurse as often as he or she wants. It may feel like 24/7 for the first few weeks, but that nursing is what tells your body to keep making more milk. It can be really hard and draining but worth it when you get through it and have a well-established supply.
