Baby Names

Elsie

My DH is set on Elsie being the middle name for our baby girl, after his Great Grandmother. The name is NMS at all, but I still agreed to try to incorporate it. I can't come up with anything that sounds okay with Elsie. I need help! Any suggestions?

Edit: our last name is two syllables and ends in ey making a "eee" sound

Re: Elsie

  • I like Elsie, although an old-fashioned name - my great-aunt was Elsie - I think it's got the potential to come back in style again...like Emily, Hazel, etc.

  • My mom's name is Elsie.  And I am a huge fan of using a family name for mn even if it doesn't "flow".  In the long run, it will have more meaning than..."we picked it because it sounded good".  So I say just pick a fn that you love.

I agree. What kinds of names do you like?

  • I love the name Elsie, which is also a family name for me.  However, we agreed that we can't use it because our cat (who has been like our baby for the past 9 years!) is named Ella and I'm sure people would feel like we were naming our baby after our cat! lol...

However, I think it is super cute and a great name (first or middle) for a baby.  And it's so awesome when you can incorporate family honor into the name of your child.

  • Would he compromise with something like Elsa or Elise?  (Elsie makes me think of the cow that's the mascot for the Borden dairy company.)

Some suggestions with Elsie as a mn:
    Rebecca Elsie
    Catherine Elsie
    Meredith Elsie

  • I also think of the Borden mascot on all those Elmer's glue bottles.

Maybe you could transform the name into something that suits you better?

  • Was Elsie great-grandma's legal name?    Or was it Elizabeth?     My paternal grandmother went by Elsie but her real name was Elizabeth and so that was what was used when my uncle named my cousin after her.
  • Would he consider Elsa instead?  I totally hear you on the "-ee" sound with with the 2-syllable "-ee" last name.  Sounds awful (my married name sounds like a sneeze b/c of this issue).  I nixed a TON of names because they or their common nn ended in the "-ee" sound.
  • I want to like Elsie but I just think of a cow for some reason :(

  • Elsie was my grandmothers name and even though she was never a fan of it herself and I'm almost positive that she'd laugh at me for using it if she were still alive, I plan to honor her by using it as a mn if we have another girl.  I'm also pretty sure that it doesn't flow well with very many names, the only name we've tossed around and like is Paige.

I like Lauren and Hannah too!

  • No, sadly he will not consider any other variation on Elsie. I tried and tried to get him to go for Elise or Ellison or Elizabeth, but to no avail.

  • If your last name ends in an "ee" sound, I would stay away from first names that end with that sound or that have nicknames that end with the "ee" sound.

I don't love Elsie or hate it. It's ok, but not bad. What names do you and your DH love? Think about how they sound with Elsie and then decide.?
  • Unless the first name rhymes with Elsie (eg. Kelsey) or is too similar to it (eg. Ella), I think most names will work well with it.  I would focus more on finding first names you love rather than trying to find something that sounds good with Elsie.  I love the idea of using a middle name to honor someone in your family, but there probably won't be many times when she'll use her full name.
  • The most amazing woman I've ever met, a Holocaust survivor, was named Elsie, so I love it for a mn.  It does depend on what kind of names you like.  I think it could go with a lot of different first names.
  • I was thinking Elise, Ellison, and Ella... and then I read your post.

If he's not willing to give on the mn, can you compromise by using a fn that you love?
