Adoption

Children's Adoption Books

I got a new box of books today! I was so excited, after reading them I thought I'd share:

I Love My Hair (by Tarpley): beautiful illustrations for children of color and as the title implies it is about the pain and joy of having AA hair

Over the Moon: An Adoption Tale (by Katz): I cried! This is so beautifully illustrated. It shows adoptive parents waiting for 'the call' that their baby had been born, it dipicted how neighbors and friends were waiting too (asking the adoptive parents when, when, when) ... then the parents get the call ... they get on a plane ... they pack all kinds of stuff .... they see their beautiful baby for the first time (in the book the baby is a girl) ... it shows how they weren't sure at first how to hold and care for a new baby but showed how much love they had for their new baby. It leaves out the birth family - I wish that it would have included them but regardless, it is a beautiful tale.

Sesame Street: We're Different, We're the Same. And We're All Wonderful - this book shows how everyone has a different nose, mouth, body shape, color, hair, and so forth but how even though they might look different they have the same function.

A Blessing from Above  (a little golden book): I cried! It is a short story about a kangaroo who has an empty pouch and wishes and wishes for it to be filled with a baby. the kangaroo sees other animals (ducks, butterflies, etc) with their babies ... and then one day while sitting under a tree a baby bird falls into her pouch. The mama bird looks down and realizes that it is best because she doesn't have any room in her nest for an extra baby. It's pretty cute and best of all it was under 2 bucks

The Colors of Us (by Katz): I LOVE THIS BOOK! The very first pages show different hands of all different shades. It shows children of all different shades and parents of all different shades. I can imagine sitting with our child and holding my hand up to one of the illustrations to find my color and for our child to hold their hand up to find their color, DH is more tan than me and so he would have a different hand color too.

Re: Children's Adoption Books

  • I love Over the Moon, too.  I love the author/illustrator's illustrations.  She has a lot of baby board books, too.  Not about adoption but still really great books.
