Infertility

Turns out I'm not 'totally' unexplained afterall (SAIFW)

I see some that frequent my blog have already read and commented (thanks!) on this.  I had b/w done last Monday for several blood cloting disorders and antibodies.  Same as with my lap & hys, I had no indication I actually had these, but had the time before starting IVF # 1 in May to get it done.  Most b/w is randomly covered by my insurance if sent to an outside lab so I figured why not.

Well Friday I was told I have MTHFR...and no I didn't just swear at you...it's a gene defect that basically means your blood clots too good.  I had to wait until today after my doctor reviewed it to find out what exactly that meant.  The only reliable information I found on the internet I copied onto my blog if you're interested (link's in my siggie!).

In a nutshell, basically MTHFR causes tubal defects (i.e. spinal Bifida) and miscarriage if left untreated.  I am now required to take a low dose aspirin every day (for blood thinning) along with a B Complex vitamin (for extra B6, B12, and folic acid) and a prescription prenatal since that's the only way I can get a full mg of folic acid which is now what I need.

Not the best news in the world, but feel so blessed that we know before IVF #1.  I felt like I had to share it with you all.  Whether you've had loses or not, I think it's a quick and easy test to have done.  I hope this knowledge helps some one here.

  • Did you request the testing or did your RE?

Do you know what all they tested for?

  • Sara-HUGE deal to know this now. You will be just fine and I am so glad you got this info now.

I also had a bunch of this b/w done after my loss just to know. Gor forbid any more losses happened that could have been prevented.

  • I'm so glad you got the info before IVF.

    GL!!

  • I saw this on your blog and I'm sorry you have that, but glad they found it before your IVF.  Hopefully treating your beforehand will ensure a healthy pregnancy.  GL!

I wonder if I'll get that test?

  • wow after all that testing... at least you have some kind of answer now!! i'm esp glad you found out before IVF - hopefully now you can move fwd with sucess! :)
  • Yay - I'm so glad you found out about MTHFR!  (Not that it's good that something's wrong, but it's nice to have an explanation!)  I had all my many vials of blood taken this morning for my rpl panel.  I'm actually really hoping they find something wrong with me.  Even if it's bad news, at least it will be an answer.  Will check out your blog tonight!   :)
  • I think it was so smart of you to do these tests before IVF #1. It sucks that you have MTHFR, but it is good that you are aware and taking action! Plenty of MTHFR success stories on the "other side"...can't wait until you are one of them too!
  • It's a nice feeling to at least find something. I have MTHFR (C677t) & FVL (hetero for both). Do you know if you have 1 gene or 2? 1 is considered not a huge deal but you are definitely on the correct treatment. The most concern with the MTHFR is that it affects the body's ability to absorb folic acid. Folic plays a large part in the development of a healthy placenta.  I take 4mg of Folic Acid in addition to what is in my prenatal, BA, and this cycle, we will start the lovenox at 3dp trigger instead of after a + pg test.  Crazy as it is, most of the population probably has MTHFR (1 copy) (and FVL as well).

    GL with your IVF!

I have 2 mutations, one hetro and one homo.  And the homo one I have is 1298c.  They said the C677t was the "more serious" one and would probably require lovenox.  I would have totally taken that if necessary and again was so thankful to find it out before IVF #1.  Not that nearly 2 years of TTC wasn't bad enough, but basically assuming IVF completely OOP was bound to fail would really suck!  Good luck in your upcoming cycle too!

  • I saw this on your blog.  I'm sorry that it added one more wrench into things, but I do think it is a good thing they found it now.  My fingers are crossed for your upcoming IVF cycle... good luck! :)

  • Its not great news by any means but I agree that at least there is something "fixable".

I too have MTHFR and Factor V. I do the same protocal as you and meet with my RE this week to decide the lovenox.  I am 4weeks 3 days along.

    GL with IVF!

  • I'm sorry you have MTHFR but so happy that you discovered it before your IVF! ?I know this must be somewhat of a weight off your shoulders and I'll be keeping ?my fingers crossed for you. ?-hugs-

  • I commented in your blog, but I also have MTHFR, and I believe the exact same mutation you do (a1298c).  I got lucky - the doctor kind of tested me on a whim - and we knew before IVF #2, thankfully.  I do feel very blessed to have known this in advance.  Most people don't get the test until they've already had a m/c
