Ameda vs. Medela pumps?

I recently found out that the LCs at my hospital can get me a discount on an Ameda Purely Yours.  I had previously registered for a Medela PISA, based on hearing/reading so many positive reviews.  So I did some research this weekend and, from what I can tell, they seem pretty comparable (the only big difference being that the Ameda tends to give users less troble w/condensation in the tubing).

Does anyone have any experience w/the Ameda, either positive or negative?  Or if you considered both, can you tell me which you chose and why?

I'll be returning to work when DS is about 19 weeks old and am planning to exclusively BF/pump for at least his first year.

Thanks!  Mary

Re: Ameda vs. Medela pumps?

  • I have an Ameda PY and really love it.  I have been back at work full-time and pumping 3x a day at work for about three months now.

I chose the Ameda because of the closed-off tubing and the price compared to the Medela PISA.  One drawback to the Ameda PY is that you usually can't find replacement parts in stores (whereas you can find Medela spare parts at BRU, Target, etc.).  Your hospital might have a shop and carry spare parts, but I recommend ordering online at least two backup sets of the diapraghms and valves and one backup set of tubing.  You should switch out the diapraghms and valves every 4-6 weeks anyway.

Ameda has a great website that includes way more info about pumping with the Ameda PY than the booklet that comes with the pump: https://www.ameda.com/breastpumping/

  • LOVE my Ameda!  Used it for both babies... both had latch issues for a while, but for dd I was pumping full time for 4 months.... then parttime for a few ... ds was full time for a month and parttime after.

the hospital where I had dd used ameda's hospital grade pumps... the tubing was the same tubing used for the Purely yours...which was handy for me... two sets are nice when you are pumping every 2 hours around the clock (latch issues and feeding issues , poor suck, poor latch... ugh).    I don't plan on having more, but have it stashed away just in case. lol

  • I also have the Ameda PY and have had success with it too.  I like that it's a closed system.
