Breastfeeding

How long until your milk came in?

I don't really remember the exact time with my first living child (maybe after 4 days following my c/s stay?), but I do remember it taking a while b/c my daughter screamed bloody murder b/c she was hungry and lost weight below the threshold. It got really bad to the point where they gave her formula (which I was furious about not b/c I wanted her to exclusively nurse BUT b/c the nurses didn't ask much less even tell me) since she was starved. I panicked then (being my 1st child) b/c I didn't think my milk would come in at all and that I would not be able to feed my baby.

I do remember the lack of sleep b/c the nurses would shuttle my daughter in like what seemed every couple minutes for me to feed her, the incredible soreness in my arms in trying to learn to hold my baby for nursing and avoiding my painful incision plus the intense pain rock hard boobs I got the night at home once my milk came in.

Oh yeah, and having nipples that felt like they were on fire after a couple of days.

Yet, I gave her nothing but BM for food until a few days past her first birthday all while working full-time! What an experience!

Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.

Re: How long until your milk came in?

  • Mine came in about 5 days after I gave birth.  I remember being at the hospital and worrying that I would never have any breast milk since my boobs didn't feel any different.  Then, on the 5th day I woke up and my boobs felt all rock hard and I was ecstatic for being able to breast feed!

  • My milk came in on day 3.
  • Baby was born 1:20am Friday, milk came afternoon on Monday.
  • Day 3 for us.  My first day home after c/s.  I woke up from a nap with ROCKS in my bra. LOL

  • Mine came in her second day of life in the afternoon.  I was surprised since I was still in the hospital.  I asked them for breastpads (I had washables and wanted some to throw away at first) and she said they didn't have any because milk doesn't usually come in while in the hospital.
