All of the grandchildren on my side of the family have four letter names. (Zoey, Milo, Owen, and Kyan). That is why I was leaning toward Kira but now I'm not sure. Opinions please.
This name always confuses me as far as spelling differences because I pronounce Kiera as Key-era and Keira the same as Kira. So, if you want Kira then I say spell it that way or Keira. I have a student named Kiera and it's a totally different name.
I never know how to pronounce Kiera or Keira. Some people say K-ear-ah and some people say Key-air-ah. I had a student for a whole year and I never quite figured out which one I was supposed to say, and she never corrected me...
I just realized that! Wow, Kyan is my favorite boy name but I could never get DH or anyone I know to go for it. What were people's reactions to it? I've loved it for years and when I share it with people I never get the same opinion.
This is my name and I spell it Kira. (awesome name choice! I've always gotten tons of compliments on my name) Oh and I pronounce it "K-ear-a" - the normal way. Almost everyone usually gets it right, especially now that it's a more familiar name because of Keira Knightly even though she spells hers differently.
For those of you who don't know, this name means "sunshine".
We had this debate with DD's name. I wanted Kira because it's simpler; DH wanted Keira. Here's how he won:
Me: I'm a teacher! We can't spell it K-E-I-R-A because of "i before e except after c"!
DH: Yeah, but what about Keith? K-E-I-T-H.
Me: Oh.
I decided to let him have his way, since he was a nice husband and all...not to mention had disproven my main objection. Now I like Keira and think Kira looks like it's missing something.
This is my name and I spell it Kiera. I pronounce it Keera, same as Keira Knightley and Kira/Kyra. I actually HATE when people pronounce my name Key-air-uh like Sierra and it happens often, so if you want Keera, I would go with Keira/Kira/Kyra. All are legitimate spellings of the name. There was an NYC ballet dancer named Kyra Nichols when I was a little girl growing up and she was my idol!
This whole conversation is why I don't like the name regardless of the spelling. I think a child should have a name that's obvious how to pronounce. Kira, Kiera and Keira are very confusing to pronounce. No one will know the correct way until they are told and it's a guessing game. My advice is to pick a new 4 letter name.?

I have to explain it a lot. I say "Like Ryan with a K"
We LOVE his name. I think it is strong and unique w/o being strange.
I like Kira better. Nice and simple. I think Kiera looks like "kee-air-uh" but Keira is okay, too, especially since Keira Knightley has gotten famous so people know how to pronounce it.
I like Kira or Kyra. Keira reminds me of Keira Knightly (sp?) and Kiera seems like a different name to me. I think it's cute to continue the tradition of 4 letter names if you can find one you like.
Re: Spelling Poll inside... wdyt?
Kira
It is pronounced K-ear-uh right? If so, that's how I would spell it regardless of the four letter name thing.
Kiera
Kiera is the way I usually see it.
Kira is also fine. I've seen it that way..but always just looks off to me.
I would pronounce these names differently.
Kira= K-eye-rah ("I" says it's own name)
Kiera/Keira= K-ear-ah or Key-ar-ah
I think I like Kiera best, but none are really my style.
The "i" in Kira is like an "ih" in "it" for me. But with the /r/ ends up being Key-ra .
The other to I pronounce Key air uh and K eye ruh

If you are going for the name pronounced "Keera" then go for Kira or Keira.
When I see Kiera, which is a name many of my students have, I think "Key-air-a" which is a different name.
I stay stick with the basics. Kira is a beautiful name and very simple.
Kira - if you want to pronounce it K-ear-ah.

Agreed! I've also seen Kira and Keira spelled Kyra.

Kiera is the best in my opinion.
Kira looks like it should be K-(long i)-ra. That's the teacher coming out in me...but I think Kira is cute too, if it will be pronounced that way.

Thanks everyone. It is now down to Kira or Keira.
I guess we will decide once we know what we are having.
