Preemies

Random gavage question

Were your kids gavaged through the nose or mouth?

Our hospital did it through the mouth (re-ran every feeding) because they claimed it helped with reflux issues and now that I think back, none of the kids that were with use in the NICU had reflux and I know that's pretty odd for preemies.

So mouth or nose and did/does your child have reflux?

    That.

They did through the mouth until he was nippling some feeds, then they switched him to nose.

  • They both had NG tubes after a few days.  They had mild reflux that caused A&B's.  They were prescribed Prilosec but we discontinued at about 2 months old when they outgrew the dose.
  • both in the nose and no reflux

  • nose and yes, reflux, but Robbie also was born with a hiatal hernia so he'd have had reflux no matter what.
  • both babies had both nose and mouth and only cassidy had reflux.
  • My guys had ng tubes for about the first 2 weeks (30 weekers). They started having massive vomiting fits so one of the neos changed their tubes to og tubes that were put in/removed for every feeding, hoping that no having an easy path out would help with the reflux.

Drake had some reflux after coming home, but he was never medicated for it. Leo had the og tube in and out for about 3 weeks longer than his brother, and he had HORRIBLE reflux his first year, and some mild oral aversions.

  • Always down the nose and well, you know our story.... Maybe there were right?
  • He had both.  Through the mouth until he was bottle feeding, then through the nose until he was full feeds on bottles.  He does have reflux, but no pain, no medication-  just spit up.
  • Ours are gavaged through the mouth... but they are only 3 weeks old so I don't know about reflux yet.  They've each only spit up once so far.

  • Both and no reflux. The majority of the time it was nose, but they did do both.
