There is no way to diagnose either without x-rays or an MRI. Your friend can take a guess at it, but I wouldn't trust that diagnosis 100% until you've had tests run.

carpal tunnel is shooting pains through your wrist... i have general soreness, especially through my joints and knuckles. hurts to make a fist, etc. she's got the md degree so i figure she knows. she said it goes along with the general swelling we all suffer through...
Carpal tunnel is not always "shooting pains" and it can affect your hands as well as wrists. It not only affects the nerves, but also the tendons passing through the tunnel. Typically the swelling of the wrist causes this. Your increase in fluid is causing swelling of the hands and fingers, and most likely is putting pressure on your tendons, making it painful to make a fist, use your hands, etc. Pregnant women can also develop DeQuervan's syndrome, another type of aching tendonitis in the thumb area due to the same swelling.
yup this is what i have too...they thought pg carp tunnel but bc its not wrist pain at all and its in my knuckles and joints and i can't make a fist or close my hand (to brush teeth, etc)....it hurts so bad i wake up in tears some nights.
Re: update: not carpal tunnel. it's arthritis!
Are you sure? Never heard of pregnancy causing arthritis.
There is also pregnancy induced carpal tunnel.
No offense to your MD friend, but doctors are not 100% correct 100% of the time.
One doc told me my wrist/hands pains could be a sign of lupus. Also said it could be carpal tunnel. Or maybe rhuematoid arthritis.
I think during pg it's hard to know what is what since the pregnancy can throw so many things off.
Regardless, I hope it feels better.

I still call BS on pregnant arthritis!
My mom's did. She got RA from being pregnant with my sister. She's had it for 23 years now.
She's doing ok. She hurts, but she's still up and active.
