3rd Trimester

My doctor told me I didn't have to...?

I always thought that around 28 weeks, you're supposed to start counting baby's kicks, but I asked my OB on Wednesday and she said I don't have to count kicks at all, unless they give me a reason to, i.e. something they think might be wrong? Is this how it usually works?!

Re: My doctor told me I didn't have to...?

  • I've never done a kick count.

  • I never do them. My doc only said too if I felt that movement had decreased.
  • I never had to do a kick count until I was 34/35 weeks. At that point, I'd have to do them once time per day. I had to make sure I felt baby kick, move 10 times within 1 hour.

  • Yes, the midwives tell me that they are more for my peace of mind, but if it makes you anxious then do not do it. I started them about 30 weeks to give H something to do...he enjoyed having a task.

  • It was because I was having weekly NSTs done due to my blood pressure.

  • I only did one, and that was because my LO was moving a lot less than usual around bedtime.  I was told if I felt something was off, or that baby was moving less to do one.

  • I did it with my first - had GD and he was breech.  But this time around, the practice hasn't brought it up at all.  I definitely feel him all the time though!
  • My dr said to do them only if I am concerned... if I think I've felt less movement than normal.  But I don't have to do them regularly or anything.

  • I only started doing them since the posts started increasing around here about decreased movement... totally freaking me out! ;)

I haven't been told to do them by any medical professional.  I have actually only heard of them through this website.

  • I haven't had to do one either.  If I get worried, I'll do it for myself, but doc has never mentioned anything to me.
  • My dr said it's optional. She said it should start being really active around the 28 week mark. After that it changes from kicks to other kinds of movements, like a rolling feeling or something. She said that if I can't feel anything at least once or twice a day from week 26 on, she would have me do a kick count chart, but if it keeps moving and stays active (no decrease in movement with the exception of random lazy days), we're fine.

I've never done one. This baby stays active enough!

  • I've never done a kick count, but she's pretty active any time I sit or lay down.
