I work at a store in the infants department, which is pretty sweet, I get to look at all the stuff and plan on what to get. One night while I'm stocking the bedding section this young lady and her mom come in. They are looking at the same cute Carebear bedding set I got for my baby and the mom sees that it comes with bumpers and gets all upset sounding and is like "Those things are no good, the baby could roll up against it and suffocate."
My thinking on this is if the baby is able to roll and it can't breathe with it's face pressed on the bumper then it would just roll away. I like the idea of bumpers, but can they be hazardous?
Re: Baby Bumpers?
babies can roll but they can't always do it voluntarily.
the american academy of pediatrics does not recommend having anything in the crib-- blankets, pillows, toys, bumper for the exact reason your customer mentioned.
i figure those pediatricians know more than i do, and can live with decorating around a bumper-less crib...
They do put out a mesh bumper though. Another study that I have read (just one out of a gazillion) was saying that an increase in air circulation has shown to decrease the risk of SIDS. The study was saying that a fan really helps lower the chances.
Out of my own reasoning, I'm thinking the mesh bumper is more breathable than the regular bumper and I figured it would probably be the better of the two. But the PP is right, there isn't supposed to be anything in the crib for a good while, until the baby can control its body movements, its supposed to be hazard free.?
Thankyou both for the input! I'll have her in a bassinett in our room for the first little while anyway, I'll just remove the bumpers in her crib until she's old enough to move and all.
Thanks for the fans/sids info. My husband and I sleep with two fans, I was gonna put one in her room as well when she moved into it because I've heard baby's sleep better when the air is a bit cool. Thanks again!
