DS's thing is that he likes to sit on the potty before bath time. It is the only time he will do #2 and he wants me to sit with him and tell him a story. Fine - I don't mind doing that - but last night he was on the potty for almost an hour. I don't want to push him too much because we had some issues with him not wanting to do #2 on the potty and holding it in, but I also don't want to spend an hour sitting in a stinky bathroom every night either.
Does anyone else's DC do this and if so how do you handle it?
Re: Does anyone else's DC sit on the potty forever?
Yep. Sometimes she goes & hops off, sometimes she goes through 7 books being read to her. It's painful.
We just let her sit unless one of us has to go. We figure she needs to know that it's ok to be there, that it's not a bad thing.
Since Ethan was 2 y.o. we were holding his hands when he was pooping on the potty.... he still likes when we hold his hands which requires me or dh sitting really close to him while he's pooping. An almost 4 y.o.'s poop does not smell like a baby's poop, kwim :-)
anyway, I don't let him sit that long on the potty for two reasons... I don't think it's good for him and I dont have that much time usually to spend in the bathroom, even if the baby is sleeping. Our bedtime routine with the stories and books take 20-30 minutes, not including the bath and teeth brushing, so I tell him we'll tell the stories then.
He does sit on it for 10+ min when he poops but he likes his privacy when he poops. He puts the hand up and says "please leave me alone". Maybe if you ask if he wants privacy while pooping he will not want to sit on the potty so long.
