Baby Bikinis

Am I the only mom who will not be putting DD in a bikini? It seems like everywhere I go there are tiny little bikinis for babies!

  • You are not the only one. That is definitely NMS.

I just can't wrap my head around them, as cute as I bet they'd look. I ended up getting a two piece for DD but It's similar to a tankini in that it has full coverage w/o belly showing but the top is flowy instead of fitting. I am so excited for her to wear it!!

I also don't love those tops that have a gathered in the center where cleavage would be breast area.

  • not the only one no. I remember seeing a hula outfit for toddlers last year at BBB and I just about threw up. coconut bra and grass skirt.  I don't need ot put her in a habit but i feel like a bikini is a sexualized thing that little kids shouldn't be in.  tank suits are just as cute but more modest
  • Not only are they NMS but that's just so much more skin to worry about burning.

  • Nope, no 2 pieces for my girls until they are much, much older. I'm also not a fan of strapless and spaghetti strap tops for girls either.
  • Umm yeah. I don't need perverts at the beach trying to look at my bikini-wearing baby. She'll be wearing the rashguard suit that looks like a shirt and shorts.

I saw those tops a couple of weeks ago!!  They seriously creeped me out.  I'm looking for tankinis/one-pieces too.

  • Soo not my style.  My pasty white kid will be fully covered this blazing summer.

  • honestly....i think those who say it is a "sexualized" thing...are the ones who are distorting the image. it's only that way if you make it that way.

Me either, my DD is growing up much to fast for me anyways, I certainly do not want to rush it.

  • I actually have one that I couldn't resist for DD #1.  It's white with red ladybugs.  The bottom is skirt like and the top is a bikini top and it has a matching hat. It is too cute.  I got it for a family trip to NC where the house had a pool.  I also got her more practical suits for the beach.  We are staying at the same type house this summer so I plan on Sarah wearing it.
  • I like the idea of putting DD in a one piece or tankini. Not really a bikini. I'm probably weird though. My parents have a really cute picture of me when I am about 4 years old in a string bikini and it is really cute though. It was the 70s :) haha

  • Ew. I don't dig the two piece either. It's not appropriate until they are able to make sure their nips are covered without you having to tell them. Target has some super cute 1 pieces and rash gaurd styles right now. I got DD a brown polka dot one that fastens around the neck and has ruffles on the booty :) Adorable and modest.

Ditto pp.My parents have pics of me in a bikini when I was 3 or 4 also. String bikini with the big toddler belly poking out lol.

  • Oh yeah, I love the little surfer top. DD will wear those. I want her protected from the sun.

  • DD will not be wearing one of those for a while.
  • I'm not thrilled with them . . . just my own thing. I plan on buying her a one piece.

Ditto.  I don't see an issue with a bikini for a baby, and I don't see it as a sexual thing at all.

hate to tell you this....but those perverts will look no matter what

  • DD had one last year that my gram got her her - she wore it a total of one time.  I will not be getting one this year - they are NMS.

Sure, but why give them more to look at?

  • why make it a bigger deal than it is?
  • i don't think a bikini on a baby is necessarily a sexualized thing but i personally will not be putting a bikini on my DD.  IMO she just doesn't need to be in one.  that's just me.
  • I will most definitely NOT being putting my baby in a bikini, or my toddler, or my preschooler, or my young child.  IT's not so much a sexualized thing as a let's-expose-a-little-less-of-her-lilywhite-skin-thing.

I however, will be rocking the sluttiest bikini I can buy this summer, while my baby is still too young to be impressionable, and while I'm still young enough to look good.

  • Hmm, I never thought twice about it. I never associated bikini's with a sexual thing. It's just a tummy...I can see for "sunblocking" purposes not putting your LO in one, but c'mon not choosing a bkinini because it's sexual I think is a little ridiculous. IMO
  • I would personally rather my baby wear the cute little bikinis now, versus later.  I have much more of a problem with her wearing one when she's 10 or 11 and she's close to the age that she actually might have something to cover up.  I don't think it's sexual at all, and that thought would have never crossed my mind...

  • Like a PP, it's not so much how it looks, it's the thought of all of that sweet skin being exposed and having to protect it.  I've got a couple of cute tankinis and one pieces in mind.  :)
  • You're not alone. I refuse to buy one for DD. I like the sweet innocence of a 1 piece on a baby! I don't think negatively of those that put their babies in one, it's just NMS.

    this.

  • For me it isn't an issue of how much skin is seen but more of it being or not appropriate for a baby.

I would rather put my baby in a swim diaper and let her go out like that on the beach then put her in a bikini!! KWIM?

Same with undies... why the heck would you let a child wear a thong????

Agreed. DD has a really cute giraffe print bikini to wear, along with a cute one-piece. She'll be 8-11 months old this summer.  SO not a sexual thing - come on, people.

Del is right.  Putting your baby in a one-piece so that 'perverts' will walk right by is a little naive and sounds silly.

  • I love the "not till they're older" answers. Definitely 10, 12 and preteen are MUCH better to wear bikinis.

Honestly, my kid mostly just swims in a swim diaper. I don't get the baby bikini concern. But i'm the mother of a 28 lb baby who fits in NO one piece swimsuits. O. So I have a finding nemo bikini for her. Its so OBSCENE!

  • NMS.  My reasoning is also that a one piece just seems more comfortable for a baby, and I want to protect DD from the sun.
