Pumpers/BFders: Q for those who have flown with their pump...

So this is going to be a really odd question... but here goes. I am travelling for work next week with collegues and will need to bring the pump with me.   Do I need to tell the screening guy that I have a pump before I send it through the xray machine?

  • You might want to...and have the manual with you as well.  My LC said that some people have had problems getting rental pumps through security...

No, only if they ask. I had one TSA employee ask me what it was, I told him & he was like "oh well I had never seen one like that before!" It made it through fine.

Also, FYI TSA has altered their policy on carrying expressed BM. You now no longer need a baby with you in order to carry it on. Unfortunately, I traveled for work before this policy was in place. I basically carried a cooler, filled it with ice or ice packs, put the BM in there, whether refrigerated or frozen. Both instances the BM endured the trip. When I used ice, some of the melted ice leaked out of the cooler, but because it was water, no damage done to my luggage. When I traveled with frozen milk (from Phoenix to DC on a 12 hour trip after enduring delays), the milk was still frozen! But just in case, carry a large plastic bag to wrap the cooler IN CASE there is a leak.

  • I flew recently and they had no problems with the breast pump.  I also had a little cooler bag with the ice pack which I wasn't sure about so I asked and they told me that was fine as well.  On the return flight home there were no questions asked and no milk in the cooler just empty bottles with the ice pack.  The only thing they did both times was wipe the inside of the pump bag with a cloth that tests for explosives.
  • Not the pump, just the milk. They took my milk from me and said they had to test it for explosives. It was just so odd the way she so matter-of-factly made that statement.

  • Nope... I just the milk.  We just got back last week and they didn't even care about the pump.  I did have to open each container of milk for them to check.
