Ok Ive stretched out my maternity leave as long as possible and I need to face her and tell her Im not coming back. Im scared out of my mind and don't know how to say it or what to do...has anyone done this before...does anyone have any advice???
A couple of teachers at my school have done this. ?All I can say is to tell her ASAP so they can hire someone or your LTS to finish the year. ?Be up front about whether you are coming back in the fall, teachers that quit after ML were told they would NOT have a job in the fall since our district is making a ton of cuts. ?Good luck!
I would just be sure to tell them ASAP because they are going to need to find a sub to take your place for the rest of the year. ?I don't know how your district works, but with mine, everything has to go through the school board first, so that takes some extra time.
I'd just tell them asap so both parties can move on. Maternity leave is contingent on employment prior to having baby, not a guarantee that you are coming back or will stay for x amount of time. You don't owe them anything except a heads up that you are leaving and I wouldn't call it 'taking advantage' by any means.
Do you plan on taking a leave of absence and returning or did you just take advantage of your school district for paid maternity leave?
I think this is a little uncalled for. Some women don't realize how much they really want to stay home until after they've had their child.
To the OP, I agree with the other posts. Just tell her ASAP so they can make sure they have someone to replace you. Good luck!
I realize people change their minds and situations can change, but when she said "Ive stretched out my maternity leave as long as possible" it sort of implies she's getting all she can out of it before she chooses to tell them.
Keep in mind that you will also be breaking a contract. My contract states that if I break it I will be liable for up to $1000 in advertising fees.
There is only 3 months left in the year. You can do anything for 3 months. I would look into finishing out the year if you can and then leave.
Otherwise maybe talk to your sub and see if they are ok with staying on. If they are then approach your principal. At least then you can say you know the spot would be covered by the sub through the end of the year.
Personally, I think its rather shaddy not to have said something till now. They sould have used the time to search for someone. Especailly if your leave is unpaid after a certain point. Its not like you are getting anything more from not telling them.
I just did this -- I was so nervous, but she was so supportive and cool about it. She said she did the same thing with her daughter. I'm pretty sure as soon as I asked to meet with her that she knew why I was coming. Don't worry, just go do it! You'll feel better when it's done.
Thanks for the advice...and just to clear up my "taken full advantage of my leave" ...In my district we do not have PAID LEAVE so I have been living without any pay for my 8 weeks! I haven't taken anything from the district at all.
Re: Advice Please: Need to tell my principal Im not coming back :O
