Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Getting my Mirena today

*crosses fingers*

No more babies for me for at least 5 years.

?*knocks on wood... just in case*?

?

Has anyone on here actually had a Mirena? I have heard numerous horror stories that all start with "My friend knows someone..." LOL?

  • I go for paragard tomorrow! I am nervous.

  • I considered paragard. I chose Mirena, though, after speaking with my doctor because she highly recommends it from personal experience. Plus, the Mirena's low dose of hormones might make my PCOS go away (or at least less severe) after a few months. :)

  • goodluck. i actuallly have no horror story to report from getting paragard on tuesday!?
  • I have the Mirena.  The insesrtion really isn't that bad, and most people love it.  I definitely like the fact that I barely have a period.  However, I think I may be one of the few who has weight gain from it.  Supposedly that can occur in abut 5% of cases.  I may have it taken out because of that.  Within a week of having it put in this time, I gained 5 lbs and haven't been able to take it off.  My doctor insists that the Mirena could not cause it, but according to the FDA, it is one of the possible side effects.  This is my second one, and about 2 years into it I slowly starting gaining weight.  The real problem is that I can't take it off.

I hope this doesn't scare you.  Honestly, most people love it and have no problems with it at all.  You will probably love it.  I know I did for a long time.

Nah. This doesn't scare me. Weight gain can happen with any BC method (except maybe condoms, gels/creams, or natural rhythm). Thanks for sharing, though. :)

  • I had the Mirena for about 6 weeks before I had to have it removed.  I really liked it for the time I had it.  Apparently the "string" was cut to short and my husband was being poked by it every time we had sex.  It was painful for him and he refused to be poked.  I also think it was a possible factor for PPD symptoms because it was not placed high enough into my uterus.  When they took it out they were surprised I was not having constant cramping form the placement. I do have a friend that has "lost" her Mirena and will have to have it surgically removed at the end of the 5 years.  However, with all this said I will still try to use it again down the road.  There are risks with every form of medicine and I think the benefits outweigh the risks.
