Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Highchair broke. My baby fell out of it. Please read.

DH and I went to lunch today to celebrate our anniversary. ?We took DS and the highchair the restaurant had was a Primo Deluxe Easy Chair. ?Please DO NOT purchase this high chair, or even use it at a restaurant. ?I had never seen one before and it looked almost exactly like the Stokke Tripp Trappe. ??https://www.primobaby.com/high_chair_02.htm??He had been sitting in the high chair for about 20 minutes when the seat just FELL OUT - literally, just fell out. ?There was no way to hook him in with a clasp (as you can see) and if there had been, he might have even been choked by it. ?In an instant, he fell about three feet, FLAT on his back... fortunately, we were by the door and there was rug, which was where his head hit, but the rest of his body was on the concrete. ?
It was so scary. ?He has been fussier than normal since then and a lot more sleepy, so I'm just keeping my eye on him. ?I already called the pediatrician just so they know. ?I'm seriously worried sick right now. ?
The restaurant.... I don't know even know where to begin. ?The service had been great until he fell. ?When we got there, we were sat immediately and then the owner came over to say hi and ask us what Andrew's name was, make small talk, etc. ?It was the best restaurant we've eaten at since moving here. ?Absolutely wonderful food. ?When he fell, he started screaming immediately, so I swooped him up, looked him over and then went outside to calm him down and get a good look at him in the light (it was fairly dark in there). ?When we walked back in, it took at least ten minutes for the manager to come over and ask if he was okay. ?When he did, he just asked us for our contact information so that their insurance company could contact us and see if he was okay. ?The waitress tried to put the high chair back together for him to sit back in??? ?I said, "No, please take it away, I do not want it. ?I will just hold him." ?We finished our meal never seeing the owner of the restaurant, who was still there, until after we paid the bill. ?They brought us our check. ?We paid. ?As we were leaving, the owner walked over and said very casually "How is Andrew? ?Can I hold him?" ?No mention AT ALL about the accident - none at all. ?We thought she was being very insensitive to not even mention it. ?Turns out, the manager had not even told her yet and it had been AT LEAST thirty minutes. ?DH called the restaurant a little bit later because the more we thought about it all, the more shaken up we were and the more mad we were that the restaurant showed such little care about what happened. ?DH even told them (in person) that they should take a good look at those high chairs because they weren't safe. ?Seriously, if an 18 pound baby can't sit safely in it, how could a 30+ pound toddler?? ?DH and the manager (who asked for our information) had some words and the manager ended up having the owner call back, who apologized profusely and then refunded our money. ?We were just completely shocked at how long it took for her to even find out about the accident, considering she was THERE when it happened. ??
I am just sick over it all. ?It kills me to no end that DS fell... I hope he is okay. ?I just don't even know if I can sleep tonight, wondering if he'll start whimpering in the night and I won't hear him. ?I have to watch him for two days; my pediatrician gave me a million signs to look for and I'm just so afraid I'm going to miss one. ?I feel so bad for him and I just want to hold him all night long. ?I don't even know what to do.

  • I would be contacting the makers of the chair and causing a huge fuss... maybe it's an issue that may lead to a recall.

*late note* I'm sorry, I didn't completely understand the story at first. This is so unfortunate, I don't know what I would have done in this situation. I'd certainly be in touch with the owner and the insurance company... hopefully this doesn't happen again... it's too bad that it happened in the first place!

  • Oh my goodness--I am so, so sorry.  That is inexcusable that the owner wasn't told.  I'll be thinking of your DC and hoping everything is fine.  It is a good sign he cried right away, and thank goodness for the rug!

  • Sorry to hear about that.  How exactly did he fall out?  Did the back fall off?
  • Oh...my....God. Surprise
That is so, so bad. I would also be freaking out right about now. I would probably put DS in my room in a pack n play or something, and watch him for those two days. A fall like that to a little baby is like an adult falling 15 feet off a roof.
I am so sorry that happened to your son. That is really scary.
  • I am so sorry. Thats so so scary.

  • OMG! I hope he does ok and I'm sure he will. Thoughts and prayers heading your way.

On another note, I commend you for being so calm. I'm not sure who would have been worse, my husband who can occasionally be a hothead or me, mama bear. I give you huge kuddos and a big hug cause you need it for all the emotional and physical trauma your family's been through.

Well, that should make her feel better. Tongue Tied

  • OMG how scary :(  Can you take him to the dr. tomorrow just to be sure?  I hope he's fine soon!
  • You are in DFW?  What restaurant?  I would be livid and worried.  I'm sorry this has happened to you.  Hope all is okay.

  • I'm so sorry that happened to Andrew.  I can't even imagine how scary that would have been.

Yeah, come on, that's totally not what she needs right now....

  • Definitely complain to the high chair manufacturer. I just called Gerber a few days ago because of some unsafe babyfood packaging I discovered and they were amazingly receptive and attentive, which makes me think they'll actually look into the problem and hopefully will help other kids from being at risk. Definitely worth the call.

Hang in there! Keep an eye on your LO, and don't hesitate to take him to the pedi or urgent care or ER if you need to. Don't worry about "over-reacting," go with your gut.

  • I'm so sorry this happened to you. I would be beyond upset. At least it sounds like the owner cared, even if the manager was awful. I'm sure your little guy will be OK, but if would set your mind at ease, I'd take him to the ER or the pedi tomorrow. Maybe having him looked over will give you some peace of mind.

  • Oh dear. Hugs to you, and good luck with your DS.

Did I read the chair description correctly that it's for kids 18 months+, but the restaurant gave it to you to use for a 7-month-old??

  • That's so scary!  If you're concerned, bring him in to your pediatrician to get checked out to put your mind at ease.

Also, I noticed on the website that it seems to be for 18 months and up.  Would the problem have happened regardless of the age of its occupant?  My guess is yes, but thought I'd point that out just in case.

  • Thanks. ?I didn't even see on the website that its for 18 months +. ?They just gave it to us to use with no warning. ?I can't imagine how hard the fall would have been with an even heavier child. ?

?He fell when the seat of the high chair fell off... there is the back, the seat and the foot rest. ??The seat broke off and was hanging down perpendicular to the foot rest. ?

?I think I'll call the restaurant and tell them about the recommended age and call the manufacturer.

?The restaurant was called Rise No. 1... its at Inwood and Lovers in Dallas. ?Good food, but we won't be going back. ?

  • I'm so sorry you and you LO had to go through that. I would be livid right about now. I'm sure your baby will be ok, but it may ease your mind to go to the ER or to the pedi tomorrow as others have suggested. I also noticed that on the website it says for 18+ months. Not that it would've made a difference, but they should be aware that they shouldn't be giving that chair to a younger child.

  • I am horrified for you and the manager of that restaurant, well, there are no words. I have to tell you that honestly I would be taking him to the hospital to get checked out...their ins. should pay you for it...that's the LEAST I would do. I know  and you know that they NEVER wanted this to happen to your baby, BUT now taht they are aware this has happened, I hope that restaurant is checking ALL of those highchairs to ensure their safety. I'm so so sorry.
  • OMG! I am so sick right now!  I have a daughter almost the exact age as your son and I would be livid with the restaurant if I were you!  I would definately be looking into this legally.  Keep a vigilent eye on your son to make sure he really is ok and definately take him to the ER if you see any signs of what the pedi told you.  I am so sorry your son had this happen.  Definately follow up on this with the restaurant and please let us know what happens.  My prayers are with you!  Kiss him lots and hold him tight.

GOOD LORD!!!!  I don't think this comment was necessary!  She's already worried enough.  Think before you post!  Do you really think this was a productive comment to make?!!

To the OP, I'm so sorry this happened.  Your poor baby!  I hope he feels better and is his happy, normal self tomorrow!!!  I hope you can get some rest tomorrow, too.  I'm just in awe over how poorly this was handled!

  • I wasn't trying to scare you with that comment. I was simply stating the facts because that high chair company needs sued, big time.
That is a malfunction that could have been much worse.
You all know I'm not normally the 'bearer of bad news' Nestie, but when it comes to something horrible like this happening due to a defect in a baby product, it makes me mad.
  • That is so scary!  I am so sorry and hope your LO is ok.
