Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Waking every hour - 5 month old

I put DS down to sleep at 7pm - he wakes up every hour from that point until around 11pm - then he will go 2 to 2 1/2 hours, but still wakes. 90% of the time we just have to give him his paci and he's okay. I ebf, and still feed him between 2am and 4am (although I do not think it is absolutely?necessary, just a need to make sure he's eating).?

Does any one else have this issue? What are you doing to try and minimize the wakings??

Re: Waking every hour - 5 month old

  • I am having a similar issue and I think it is related to this week's solid, but I was wondering if mine had a little gas that would suddenly make her uncomfortable and wake her. ?For the past hour and a half she has been waking every 30 min or so and i put the paci back in a she is sleep, so I am not sure!!

  • Yikes, that really stinks. If he is just making noise and not crying, I would leave him. If he is still in your room, I would move him to his own. Otherwise, I have no idea. I hope he at least naps well. Geez.
  • OMG, I could have written this post, but DH is 5.5 months.  He was waking every hour, but last week we started doing our own version of Ferber, I guess.  I didn't follow it to the book, but I started by letting him cry for 10 min, going in, 20 min, go in etc.  The first 2 nights he cried for 2 HOURS STRAIGHT.  it made no difference that we went in.  Then I screwed up this w/e when I went to my inlaws for 2 nights and didn't let him try to soothe himself and picked him up right away so he didn't wake them.  then we had to start all over Sunday.  But last night he slept from 8-2, I nursed him, he woke at 4, I nursed him, then he cried after that until 5:30, I had to get up 1 hour later with my 2 year old.  So, it seems like 1 step forward, 2 steps back but we are making progress with how we are doing it.

  • He is actually waking up screaming the first couple of times - after that it more of a whiny cry that progresses. usually I have to pick him up at the 8 o'clock cry just for a few minutes, but usually after that the paci will cure it.

He has slept in his own room since he was 4 weeks old, otherwise I am sure it would be a lot worse.

  • I have been doing this for months. DD is now 9 months old.  Just the past few weeks I stopped getting up (I used to always feed her then I started just popping the paci back in her mouth) The pedi said its more habit thanneed.  I just let her cry for about 2-3 minutes and she'd fall back asleep.  Now she only wakes up maybe 1-2 times which is a huge improvement in only 1 week!

I am going to have to try this - it's so hard. I jump every time I hear a peep out of him! And I try to hurry to pacify him so he doesn't wake my husband.

  • Has he always been this way or is this a recent development?  DS was a good sleeper up until about 6 weeks ago and then he just got progressively worse and worse.  One day he developed this cough and congestion, which didn't go away, so DH took him to the doctor and we found out that he had a double ear infection!  We got him on amoxicillin and after a few days, he started sleeping great again.  My best friend is an audiologist and she said that his ear infection could have been there for weeks without us knowing, so I am pretty sure that was the problem.
