Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How much time does DH spend with your baby/children?

DH works such long hours.......he commutes 3 hours a day.  He sees our boys (1year3months, and 5 months)in the a.m. when he changes their diaper.  Then he gets ready for work, I take them downstairs for breakfast etc.  He leaves around 7:30-8, and gets home??????? here we are at 8:30pm and he still isn't home.  Both boys are always in bed by the time he is home, so M-F, he literally spends about 5 min. a day with them.  And how about a poor mommy!  No time with my husband, and responsible for ALL childcare duties all day long- the evening is craziness!-dinner, baths, breathing treatments, books nursing, cleaning up-AAAAHHHHH!!!!!  Damn economy!

Re: How much time does DH spend with your baby/children?

  • DH gets C up and gets her dressed and feeds her breakfast so that is their time. I feed Julia in our room so that is our quiet time. Then we watch Caillou as a family in our bed, then he gets ready and the girls and I hang on the bed. In the evening I do Caroline's routine including bath and dinner and bed and we eat when he gets home then he takes the baby and does her bedtime routine and entertains her or snuggles with her while I study in the evenings. I go to class all day Saturday, after that we go to the park as a family, Sunday we make a big breakfast and go to church as a family, come home and the girls nap then I go study and he chills out.

  • my dh works with his parents and is 9-10 most days (it's not ecomomy but asian work ethic thing that is my enemy now!!) he plays with ds in the morning and when he comes home during the day for a shower. otherwise its sunday for daddy and ds :( not the best.
  • DH leaves at 8:00 when DD gets up, he lets her out of her room usually, then he gets home about 3 days a week around 7:30 and sees her for about 30 minutes before he tucks her in.  The other days, not at all.  On weekends, he usually spends between 2 and 4 hours with her depending on how much work he has to do on other things.
  • Oh man, that's rough.

DH is a librarian, so there's no overtime and there'sf flexibility in his schedule. It's a pretty family friendly career. Mondays and Wednesdays DH gets home at 6:15 pm and watches Jude for the rest of the evening (except when I nurse) and gives him a late night bottle. Tuesdays he comes home at 1:15 pm and takes care of Jude for the rest of the day and evening. I have an afternoon class and an evening class on that day, with just enough time in between classes to come home and nurse Jude. Thursdays DH works a split and is home from 1:15-4:45 pm to watch Jude while I go to class. Fridays he is home by 5:15 and takes over evening duty. He's home on the weekends. He gets a little bit of time with Jude in the mornings before work too. He also takes off for Jude's wellness check-ups, so I don't have to go alone.
  • We're really lucky; DH just went to 3 - 13 hour and 20 minute shifts (stupid, I know, but he works for the govt).  So that means he is off Sat-Tuesday.  He is on FT daddy duty all day on Mondays and Tuesdays and he really seems to love it.  He's already taken him to two spring training games this week!
