Preemies

Severe bradycardia?

I know bradycardia is common in preemies but Dylan is having a TON of episodes and his heartrates gets really low.  The dr.s and nurses are starting to get concerned and I'm freaking out that there is osmething wrong with his heart.  He is going to get an EKG and echocardiogram and I'm so nervours they will find something.  I'm just hoping his bradies are due to his prematurity...any experience?

Re: Severe bradycardia?

  • I'm a NICU nurse and I happend to walk across this post and thought I might be able to help a little. My first thoughts (which i'm sure the other doctors and nurses caught) would be does he need his caffeine level checked or is he even on caffeine? Is he on antibiotics, if not does he have an infection, because sometimes when they get sick they start doing that like crazy. IS he intubated?
  • I'm sorry he is giving you a scare.  Were they aware of a PDA at birth?  My DD had a PDA and was on caffeine to help her breathing.  She was given a dose of medicine to help the PDA and it closed up.  I hope its a simple fix, and they get the results to you soon.

Sam had a ton of brady's when he came off of his caffeine. ?They never were concerned, though, and his spells stopped 5 days before he came home. ?I hope they find out the culprit soon!
  • both of mine were on caffeine every afternoon around 29-ish weeks, if i remember correctly. ?both had A's and B's and the older they got, the better it got. ?i'll keep my fingers crossed for the EKG and the echo. ?Please let us know. ?(((((((hugs & prayers)))))))))))
  • C had As and Bs a lot too, but never had the EKG (that I remember...).  As she got older the bradys seemed to be associated with reflux.  That may be something to watch for.
  • Thanks ladies, he has been on the MAX dose of caffiene since like 2 days after birth..so that should be helping and it doesnt seem to be.  They don't think its an infection cause his blood counts are normal and no fever, etc....

Everything was goiong so well.  I hate this.

  • My first thoughts were PDA and caffeine.  DD had caffeine once in the NICU.
