BFers... advice please

I know you are not doctors, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

As of this morning, I have a red blotch on my one breast. It's warm to touch, and feels like a bruise when I touch it, but doesn't hurt otherwise.

I have two questions...

1- sound like something specific? what can I do about it?

2- who do I call? obgyn, family doc? I always feel like breastfeeding is gray area with doctors.... not sure who handles what.

TIA

  • check out kellymom.com.  the site has really useful info to self-diagnose when you can.  most of the BFing problems don't need meds, so you can avoid the doctor visit.  it sounds like a plugged duct to me, but look out for mastitis (which would need a doctor visit).  If your pediatrician can recommend an LC, I'd call her and see if she can rec a doctor.  My OB didn't help with BFing issues, so I'd assume it's a family doctor.

  • I'd probably call a LC first, just to ask over the phone.  Then, I'd probably head to the OB if the LC said it was worth getting checked out. (but I don't currently have another primary doctor...)

The fact that it's warm makes me think it's infected? But like you said - I don't have MD after my name.  I hope you get it figured out.

  • It sounds like a plugged duct to me....however like the PP said, please check out/post @ kellymom.com.  Those ladies always have excellent advice about this kind of stuff.
  • Not saying it is but infections are typically red and warm to touch. Or possibly a clogged duct. BUT since it's warm and red I would lean more towards infected duct.

    Call your family dr. HTH.

  • It sounds like a clogged duct.  I had something similar a couple of times.  Here is a good website:

But you should check with your doctor.  I would think your OB/GYN would be the doctor to call.  You can always start there and they'll tell you if you should call your PCP.
