Babies: 0 - 3 Months

is everyone NOT on the same page RE SIDS?!

I keep seeing pictures of all these people's babies in cribs with all of this SHIIT in the crib! blankets!  those stuffed animals that are like a blanket/stuffed animal, just multitudes of SHIIT!  I see these pictures and I think to myself "wow how did they miss the boat on this one?" ultimate parent FAIL.

I even knew this crap was a SIDS risk 18 years ago when my little brother was born!  Does anyone wonder this?

not all of the pictures are on here.  there was a girl on The Doctors last week when they were talking about SIDS who when told not to put anything in the crib goes "wow that's so bland!" It boggles my mind!

Re: is everyone NOT on the same page RE SIDS?!

  • I agree. Even if not why in the hell would you take that risk. What if is not good enough for me.

  • Wait, wait, wait a second. You have a one month old and you are attacking others?
  • To give some people the benefit of the doubt, sometimes people put these items in the crib for pictures only.  Let's hope so.
  • Two possible explanations come to mind -

1 - the picture is staged with the stuffed animals

2 - the baby doesn't sleep in the crib

  • DD's crib is full of clothes and stuffed animals and blankets. She sleeps in the swing.
  • FYI - Blankets don't cause SIDS. They cause suffocation.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a syndrome marked by the symptoms of sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant.

oh wow camera lady, shame on me for being an informed parent! it has nothing to do with the age of my child, anyone who has a child should be aware of how this puts babies at risk for sids!

  • imageCameraPerson:

I don't think she is attacking...she is questioning why someone would put their child at risk.  You don't have to be a mother at all to wonder something like that.

  • I agree... DS sleeps in a crib that has only a breathable bumper, but I have taken pictures with stuffed animals around hi in the crib. I would never let him sleep in there with them unattended. I'm sure that's the case the pictures you're upset about.

I agree, you really should know what you are talking about before you go on a rant.

BTW people who don't have kids or just had them give the best parenting advice Huh?

  • this picture is from a girl i know IRL- the caption of it was "ds is already taking naps in his crib like a big boy!" he was covered in this huge fleece blanket, and stuffed animals around him.

  • hmm.. but your original post said you see several pictures of ppl on here.. just sayin
  • yeah that is bad.

Why is it that if you don't have a child, or if you JUST had a kid, that you are totally written off from giving advice or being heard?  Common sense seems to be pretty useful IMO.  And educating yourself about situations.  SIDS or suffocation risk, who gives a fvck...it's all dangerous for a child and it shouldn't be done.

right! and because you have older children, you are the foremost expert on parenting?  by this logic, i should be taking advice from britney spears!

  • I TOTALLY agree. I see people who put 2 blankets on their kids and there are stuffed animals everywhere!!  And they definitely do it when their kids are sleeping in the crib. It's very odd and I see it all of the time on The Baby Story especially.

And to the PP..they don't know what causes SIDS but it is believed to be an issue of not getting enough air to the baby...and blankets and stuff in the crib is a BIG no no in the sids world.

  • You're just really rubbing me the wrong way. I am sorry.
  • your right, you didn't say people on here, guess I just assumed that part

  • Whoa I miss everything.  Kristinhart, you kick ass.  Funny thing is, those who have older children and are getting pissy b/c you have a new baby know what you are saying is true.  Why the argument?  Again, the reason I was MIA for 4 wks.

  • Did you ever stop and think maybe those "items" were put there for pictures??

I know I put a darling stuffed animal next to dd in her crib and took a pic. Then I removed the animal.

Did you also know that there are a lot of factors that may or may not contribute to SIDS? Stuffed animals is hardly at the top.

    ?

THANK YOU!  Ugh the SIDS topic drives me INSANE.  It's not SIDS if they suffocate.  It's SIDS if they die suddenly and there isn't an explanation.

no prob!!!! glad i could be informative to u!!!!

  • I understand your concern, but it seems inflamatory and judgemental.  If I take pictures of the bed I sleep in their are tons of pillows et al. on it, but we take them off to sleep.  I would not assume everyone is doing the wrong thing because of a siggy pic or pip. Just my opinion...

they weren't siggy pics.  they were people who wrote captions "ds is taking a nap in his crib like a big boy!" and people on the show "The Doctors" who called cribs with nothing in them "bland" compared to cribs that had chachkis all over the place.

  • So do you have the same reaction to someone with lead paint or smokers?  B/C those put babies at a high risk for SIDS too.

yep!  i dont discriminate against risk factors!

  • I just ran across this post while doing my middle-of-the-night pumping.  Yea!

I'm not sure if it was me that you were referring to since I made a post like this on my local board.  Just to explain the picture, I was in the room with him putting away clothes while he was asleep in his crib.  He normally sleeps in a sleep sack without with no blankets.  He didn't have one on, and it was chilly in his room.  So, while I was in there, I put a blanket over his legs.  There was a lovey in there too, but I did that just to take a picture.  Just to ease your mind, he never sleep with blankets unless he has full supervision.  I hate my post was misleading on my part.

As far as giving out advice, I don't think Kristin was being malicious in her post.  She was just stating a concern/observation of her"s.  You never know what some people know, and what they do not know.  I think parents of all age children have valuable advice to offer from their experiences thus far.  Yes, someone with older children does have more life experiences, but that doesn't mean that bc you have a 1 m/o, you don't know anything.  That is just my opinion.

    The lady on The Doctors...WTH??

  • I agree with those who are annoyed by the misinformation about what SIDS actually is. Correlation does not equal cause. The babies deaths are unexplained. If 51% had stuffed animals in their cribs or blankets in their cribs, then they can say there is an increased risk of SIDS if you have a stuffed animal or blanket near your baby. More babies on their tummies died of SIDS, because a LOT of babies slept on their tummies... so now they say the back is safer. I'm sure eventually they'll say the tummy is safer again...

If you are worried about suffocation, then say that, but don't mislead people by inferring that all infant deaths are SIDS.

  • I agree with you.  I remember someone posted a picture of their kid in the middle of MANY stuffed animals in their crib like a "can you find the baby" photo and I didn't assume she was sleeping with them all!  Always have to be careful not to accuse unless you know for sure.  Even if the message said he is finally sleeping in the crib she still could have put the animal next to him for photo.

Furthermore I hear everyone about the blankets.  However, I admit I put a light one on DS once he stopped liking swaddling.  It was either that or he froze at night because he wouldn't do the sleep sacks...he sweat too much in those.

    Praying this little one sticks!
