Runners - Over 20 Weeks

Are you finding that it's getting more and more difficult to keep up with your running routine - I know it is necessary to modify it as you get bigger and bigger - but just this week (between 24 and 25 weeks), it has been increasingly difficult for me to run.  I find myself stopping often to stretch and catch my breath. Up until now, I've really been feeling ok while running and have been keeping up with a somewhat regular, slightly modified routine (running 4-5 miles instead of 6+ and taking more walking breaks).

I'm looking for input from other runners ~ just curious if maybe I'm overdoing it or if it's normal?  I just remember a post from a couple other runners on here a week or so ago about running 8+ miles still...?

Re: Runners - Over 20 Weeks

  • my doc told me that i should be able to carry a conversation while running, otherwise i am overdoing it. so keep that in mind and pace yourself.

  • Of my running group, all of us are pregnant. My two partners are further along than me. One is 21 weeks and one is 15 weeks. We've slowed down considerably and walk a lot more, but we're still running (well, I walk way behind them because of my hernia at the moment) 6-8 miles on Saturdays. One is planning to do the cherry blossom 10 miler in April, and I think she'll be 26 weeks then...she can still do the distance, it's just a lot more walking and slower than before.

  • I was starting to feel this way around 20 weeks but then... *sniff* my hip pain became out of control and I had to stop.  oh how I miss running...

anyway just slow down and take it easy. sounds like you're listening to your body by stopping to catch your breath. I was doing a walk-run combo already at 20 wks because I know I tend to push too hard and I wanted to make sure I hung back a little.

Wow -10 miles...I haven't tried any more than 6 since I've started showing.  Before I was pregnant 10 miles was nothing...I wonder if I could do 10 with a slower pace and more walking....interesting. Thanks.

  • I'm 26 weeks now and I have definitely slowed down. For the most part, it is not my stamina but my legs, knees, and feet that begin to hurt so I have to walk more. My running partner is not pregnant, but she has been wonderful at running at my pace. I did get a maternity support belt and that has helped me a lot. I think the extra weight does have some extra impact on my feet so that is probably the bulk of me slowing down vs. being out of breath or tired. I feel like I could run farther but I have to stop because of my feet or knees.

I am still planning on doing a 5K in a couple of weeks. I figure I will probably walk the majority of the course and do what I can.

  • I definitely had to slow down! A lot of it had to do with pulling feeling in my stomach and my boobs getting too huge it hurt. But I still go for good light jogs!
  • I jog/speed walk, but my hips have been hurting... not to mention I can't find a strong enough sports bra for these new boobs I'm lugging around.

I was a Personal Trainer for 4 year and I've trained several woman through their pregnancies.  The rule of thumb is that you have to be able to speak.  If you aren't getting enough oxygen, that means that your baby isn't either.  If you are breathless when doing cardio or have to grunt/strain when lifting weights you need to rest for a minute and take it a little easier.

  • Oh my goodness, bless you all! I have been feeling like I was the only pregnant runner and I'm getting enourmous amounts of crap about running from my family who thinks I should read a book and not run. Argh!

I ran the Marine Corps Marathon last Oct and the Jingle Bell 10K in Dec, so I was a serious runner before getting KU. I took a few weeks off in the 1st Tri but did 6 miles this past weekend and 8 miles the weekend before.

I am signed up to run the National Half Marathon on March 21 and my doctor says if I feel good, then it's OK. I'm also signed up for the Cherry Blossom 10 in April...

SO GLAD to see you all are still running since you are all ahead of me... I am barely showing, so it's not really uncomfortable for me yet. I did slow my pace tho from a 9-min/mile to a 12-min/mile crawl. And I walk more.

Again - You all rock! Yay, this thread made my day!
