So, my best friend from college is a peace loving, bleeding heart liberal who preaches tolerance and claims to be really open to other people's ideas. However, she contradicts herself sometimes by forming a very strong opinion about things. My husband is very sensitive to this, being about as opposite of a bleeding heart liberal as you can get, but I had never noticed it much until she came to visit this weekend. We were discussing the sex of the baby, and when I mentioned that we were excited for our appointment to find out on March 23, she kind of went "hmmm...you're not going to wait?"
I was like, "no, we may still wait and let the next one be a surprise, but we're too excited to know this time, so we've made that decision". There was definitely an attitude from her like "how conventional". It doesn't bug me a lot, it just feels the same as when you realize your parents aren't perfect, you know, to realize that your friend preaches tolerance of everyone, but really just means everyone with her ideas!
Anyway...felt like posting b/c work has been SO BUSY the last 3 days I haven't even visited!
Re: Friend rant!
And my response is "that's terrific to know how you will handle it for yourself in the future and just wonderful that you are suportive and understanding of our choices as parents as a good friend would be." A nice STFU with a steaming side of guilt. You can use that for just about anything too. It's pretty handy. DH and I are middle of the road but my bro and SIL are very liberal and dogmatic in their beliefs (and forcing them down other people's throats) and my parents are very conservative and the same way. It's a wonderful response that has served to shut them all up.
