So, the vet said Rusty has a shallow hip joint and is going to need surgery or he will get really bad arthritis. He didn't actually sustain an injury, he just moved wrong and the hip didn't keep his leg in place. They said DH can pick him up at 2pm (they gave him sedatives so they could xray him and they are waiting for them to wear off) and he'll find out more about the surgery then.
My family has had labs for years so I'm familiar with hip dysplasia but I've never seen a dog this young be affected by it. He turns 1 the end of March. He's not overweight (in fact he's a little skinny) We adopted him from the shelter and all we know is that he is a red heeler mix but we have no idea what he's mixed with. He is much taller than heelers normally get, which could be the problem--rapid growth can lead to hip problems.

Re: Update on my hurt Doggie
sad! are you going to get the surgery?
i know this seems crazy - but our little pom has seizures and the banfield pet hospital offers "dog insurance." we bought it and it has saved us lots of money. it's something that you can buy and use as soon as you need it you just have to sign and one or two year contract to keep it. it includes regular doggie maintenance (teeth brushing, shots, etc) and it's been really great. do you have a petsmart where you live? you should check into it maybe.
edit: it also includes major discounts on surgery and medicine.{forever remembered and missed my sweet babe}

Thanks for the info ladies!! I think we are definitely going to have to look at the surgery. In the last month his hip has done this twice. The first time it didn't hurt him as much, he just didn't put his full weight on it for a few hours. Last night he was up most of the night whimpering and shaking in pain.
My lab/rott mix Sadie had hip dysplasia but she had no real problems with it until she was 8 or 9 then we put her on Rimadyl daily for the pain.
