2nd Trimester

I need help with our girl name...please!

Background:

We don't know if we're having a boy or a girl until Friday, but I'm a planner so I'd like to work this out now.  I need your opinions!

DH and I finally agreed on our boy name the other day, Ryder Cress.  He has always wanted to named his first son Ryder, but he wanted Jenkins to be the middle name.  I could not stand Jenkins, and after talking about it a lot, we decided on Cress, which is my maiden name.  It is also a Celtic first name, so we thought it wouldn't be too weird and it would really make my grandmother happy.  She misses my Poppy, and this will be a nice honor to him.

Well, we wanted to do a similar thing for our girl name, but DH and I are having a problem there.  We easily decided on Breanna as the first name, but we're stuck on the middle name.  Originally, we had no problem agreeing on choosing Grazia (my late grandmother's real name) as the middle name.  I thought it would be a nice honor to her because when she came to America her family was afraid of persecution and decided to call her Grace rather than her real name.  DH seemed on board with this, and he understood why I wanted her middle name to be Grazia, but today he said he likes Grace better.  I don't want to use Grace because I like the idea of using her real name.

Sorry if this is so confusing!  What should I do?  Can someone please enlighten me?!

  • I don't know-I kind of like Grazia, especially based on the story.  Also based on the story I would not want to do Grace, but that's just me.  I think Breanna Grazia sounds really neat-but I'm all for unique/cool family names.

  • Grazia is better IMO. Grace seems kind of filler to most people.
  • I really like Grazia, but you and your DH need to decide on the name.  I think your story is a great one!  GL deciding!!

  • Thanks, so far, ladies!  I told DH that I posted this and we're going to use your answers to help in our decision.

This name-picking business is hard work!  The name we choose will follow the baby his/her entire life.  Whew!  Smile That's a lot of pressure for two people!  hehe.

  • The original name has so much history.  She will always have a cool story to go with her name.  I like names with history.  We are trying to decide the same thing right now. My Great Aunt is named Nettie and is still going strong at 101.  I wanted that to be the baby's middle name, but DH isn't crazy about the name. I keep saying, it has a good history!  I don't know what we are going to decide.

  • I really like the story behind Grazia, and it is pretty too!  I do like Grace (thats the girl middle name we have picked) but I think that I'd go with Grazia if I were you.

I'm big on name history too...when will these DHs understand that names with history will give the child depth?!  lol

  • Based on the story I wouldn't do Grace.  I'd go with Grazia.

I think Breanna Grazia is very pretty and the story is meaningful.  I think middle names are a great opportunity to use meaningful family names if you have them rather than just 'filler' like pp said.  My DH doesn't love our boy middle name, Emanuel (after my grandfather), but he too would rather use a family name with meaning rather than just pick something at random.

  • Grazia absolutely, it is a family name which is cool and Grace is a little to popular for me.

  • I love Grazia.  I would bargain- he can have his Jenkins if you can have Grazia.  That's how I would play.

  • Too many a's at the end of the first and middle name. Breanna Grace sounds better and will be much easier to say. I don't see it as being any less of an honour.
  • k- first of.. my last name is Kress.. haha.. so nice call on that!...  haha but i like breanna grace, honeslty. i see where you are coming from, but breanna is such a nice name and i think Grazia just makes it sound funny. i really think grace still honors ur gram
  • I don't like the way Brianna Grazia sounds, however, it is a cool story and it sounds special to you so I don't see a reason not to use it.  Based on the story, it kind of seems like using Grace would have a negative association so I wouldn't choose that.  I'd either agree with your H to use Grazia or go with something else.

  • I vote for Grazia.  Grace is sooooo overdone.  It's pretty, but there is nothing original about it.  I agree, you should use Grazia because of the history behind it.  You grandmother would have felt honored if you use this name.
