isolated choroid plexus cysts...

...anyone else have this scary news at their big u/s? The day we got the big news (it's a boy!!!) we also got the scary news that our little one has bilateral cpc in his brain. We go back for a level II u/s on monday and the doctor said it's nothing to worry about. By themselves they will usually go away on their own, but in combination with other cysts or deformities they can indicate a chromosomal disease.. anyone else have this or dealing with the fear of the unknown???

Re: isolated choroid plexus cysts...

  • I'm so sorry dear! DD didn't have any seen problems on the u/s and I haven't read on here of that particular problem either. You may want to check with the high-risk board.

  • From everythign I have read or heard of these your Dr is right. These are considered "soft markers" for chromosomal issues, if alone they don't mean much. The perinatoligt I work with described them as a freckle or pimple, nothing meaningful. Did you have any of the early screenings done? The serum screeening or NT? I knwo if these were normal that the cyst means even less.

A good friend of ours had this found on her ultrasound & they now have a beautiful, healthy 9 month old.

None the less, I am sure this is very scary. Hang in there. They do usually disappear tho! Good Luck

  • we did.  our little lulabelle has one on each side of her head.  they aren't actually "in" their brains, rather just by them.  our OB also said that since she showed no other signs of chromosomal problems (clenched fists, club feet, etc) they will most likely go away by themselves by 30 weeks.  we have a follow up u/s then to be sure.

here are some really great websites (with encouraging information rather than bad news)

good luck.  try to stay positive.

  • My DS had bilateral CPCs too (until 24 weeks)!  I had a bad quad screen, so we ended up having amnio... and DS ended up absolutely fine.

After all the research I've done, I have never, ever, ever, come across a case of isolated CPCs indicating a genetic abnormality.  If something was wrong with your DC, the U/S would indicate something else amiss (heart malformations, problems with the kidneys, rocker-bottom feet, cleft palate, or clenched fists, to name a few).  I feel very confident that nothing is wrong with your LO, otherwise the sonographer would have seen something else that looked amiss.  They have to refer you to these perinatologists to be "better safe than sorry".

I know it will be hard to make it through the weekend, but you will feel much better on Monday.  If the Level II U/S doesn't find any other abnormalities, you can rest assured that your baby is absolutely fine.  Don't let them make you nervous.  Smile  Those specialists sure have a way of doing that!  CPCs in isolation mean absolutely nothing.  They don't indicate anything, and in most cases, they go away on their own by 24 weeks.  Even if they don't, it won't affect your LO's life in a negative way.  They're really not a "cyst", but more of a water-filled sac.  My genetic counselor told us that they have found them in autospies of completely normal 85 year old people.

  • my baby had that too actually. my doctor said the same thing "don't worry about it, they usually go away on their own"...but how are we not supposed to worry!? anyway, it did eventually go away so that was good, but i know how you feel! people can live with this their entire lives and the doctor even said brain surgeons think nothing of it because people can live normally their entire lives with it.

  • Thank you all so much for the info and support! My DH and I did some research on our own.. i think I just wanted some reassurance from some other moms-to-be! I'll check back in on Monday and let you all know how it goes... fingers crossed. Thanks for the positive thoughts! (and websites!!)
