Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

interesting... from 1 year doc appt today...

our pedi said that its OK for us to give DD 2% milk instead of whole and that once she's 18 months we can give her skim milk.  She said its something new that they are saying... DD is 40%ile and she didnt have any issue with her getting less fat from milk. Thought that was interesting to share....

  • hmm. id like to see the research either way. i only like skim milk so its such a waste to buy the whole milk and try to get my son to drink it but half goes down the drain! it would be a nice comprmise to just buy 2% for a while.

  • Wow, I've never heard that before.  Zachary's pedi said that as long as you're offering healthy fats, there's no need to restrict toddlers' fat intake until at least 2 years old.

How do you feel about what your she said?

  • my son has been on 2% milk since he was about 14 months .. he wouldn't drink vitamin D milk doctor said not to worry about it.. but he is in the 100 percentile..
  • I hadnt done any research on milk either so right now I dont have an opinion on it.  DD easily transitioned from BM to forumula to whole milk so I am not worried about it in that sense.  I just bought a new half gal of whole milk so it will give me a few days to research and see what i come up with.

Whats the benefits of whole milk in the first place? Just for the full fat?

  • That is so strange.  I've always heard it isn't about weight it is about fatty acids that help develop the brain.

  • I was just about to put up a post asking if anyone else's DC was on 2%. Our pedi told us to put DS on 2% at our 1 year earlier this week. He is in the 95% for both height and weight. She told us that he didn't really need whole milk and that we could re-evalute at 15 months. I had never heard of a baby on 2%.
