Breastfeeding

Question..

What's the reasoning behind dumping the rest of a bottle of BM if they didn't finish it all? I don't fill them up all the way for this purpose, but why is that the rule?

Re: Question..

  • I suppose we probably do this all wrong, but I don't dump a bottle if DS doesn't finish it. I stick it back in the fridge and we use it later.

He's not gotten sick from it, so I don't see what the big deal is either.

  • It has to do with bacteria from baby's mouth getting into the bottle. Personally I've always stretched the "one hour" rule a little bit and been fine, but only with breastmilk, not formula (as bm has some antibiotic properties in itself).

  • Formula 'goes bad' after an hour, but I've reused breastmilk many times. It has to do with germs from the baby getting into the bottle...as alisonada said BM has some protective properties to it where formula does not.
