Bloody Nose, should I be concerned?

I had my MOPS group this morning and when I picked my son up from the childcare they told me he had a bloody nose. Just that he was playing and it happened. It's still bleeding now that we are home, not a ton but enough to see it in his one nostril. They don't know if he knocked it somehow or what. I just laid him down for a nap. I'm really worried. Should I call the Dr or is it probably a fluke? I should mention he hasn't wanted to eat all day and has a minor runny nose and cough. WDYT and WWYD?

Re: Bloody Nose, should I be concerned?

  • It's possible it could be just from his nose being dry.  That happens to me a lot in the winter.  Try using some saline drops in his nose to see if that helps.  If not, then it is definitely something else.
  • I don't think one time is a big deal, but, yes, you should call if it keeps happening. It can sometimes be a symptom of something scary. One time, though, is probably nothing to worry about. I get bloody noses sometimes in the winter because of the dry air.

  •  I would do nothing and I wouldn't be concerned at all unless it doesn't stop after an hour or so . . .  but this is coming from someone who was plagued by bloody noses as a child.  If I just bumped it slightly it bleed.  My allergies made it bleed, etc etc  It sucked, but it was never any cause for concern.
  • Just sounds like he has a cold.  I wouldn't worry.
