I know I've been posting here a lot and I'm about 3 months early but there's a huge turn around of threads on the 6-12 and mine sometimes slip by w/o an answer.
Ok so here's my issue. DS was EBF for 9 months and now I have to suppliment as I've run out of my frozen stash and can't pump more than an oz or so. He takes 6oz at night in addition to bfing. We gave him 2oz of Similac Advance in the morning the day before yesterday & he took it and seemed ok on it. Then around 1pm the next day he had a huge blowout - covered from head to toe in poop. This happened twice more at about 3 hr intervals yesterday. Then we mixed 1.5oz of Similac w/ 4.5oz bf for his night feeding. He drank half the bottle and projectile vomited the whole thing. Now I don't know what to do...should I try a different formula? which one? I doubt its a lactose intolorance as he eats a lot of dairy (yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese and I cook w/ whole milk). Is this common? What do I do? I left a msg for the pedi...I don't think he'll call back till evening. TIA
Re: formula issues (? from 6-12)
Is it possible that he has a stomach bug? Is anyone else sick in the family or at daycare, if he goes? When Adam had a stomach bug he acted totally normal, still wanted to eat and play, but had horribly loose stool and vomited twice.
That said, maybe it's worth trying some other formulas. Your pedi might be able to give you samples of other ones if you just stop in. Our pedi gave us Enfamil Gentlease and Nestle Good Start when Adam was very fussy as a newborn. Not the issues you have, but the pedi might be able to help with samples...
No stomach bug that I know of. He doesn't go to daycare either =/
Pedi originally told me to go next step formula since he's 9 months but we had a buch of similac advance and wanted to see if he'd take that. I'm thinking of trying goodstart now but afraid he'll have another reaction.
DD went (is going through it right now actually) this a couple times. I weaned her at 9 months and she started having runny poops. Not quite diarrhea, but much more runny then usual. At 11 months, pedi suggested we switch her to Gentlease (for lactose and because it's easier to digest). Just because they can handle small amounts of dairy does not mean that they don't have a lactose sensitivity (not necessarily tolerance, just a sensitivity to it). I have a sensitivity to lactose but I can eat all the yogurt and cheeses I want, as well as ice cream.. if I drink milk though, it's all over!
I spoke to DD's pedi about this yesterday at her 12 month visit because I had switched DD to NextStep formula nd she immediately started having diarrhea. It didn't stop after I switched her back to the Gentlease though.. Pedi said it COULD be a virus, but there's also a good chance it's a lactose sensitivity since she's fine w/ yogurt, cheese, etc.. We started switching her to soy yesterday (1/2 soy milk 1/2 Gentlease because she wouldn't drink straight soy yet) and the diarrhea has stopped now. So I don't know.. is it total coincidence that it started and stopped at the same time as the formula, that it's a virus.. I'm leaning more towards it being the formula. Like the pedi said, and like happens with me, it builds up in your system until you can't handle it anymore.
So.. as long as that is, my suggestion to you is to try switching to Gentlease first and see if that makes a difference. If it's still bad, I might try switching to soy. It can take awhile for their body's to get used to it though, so keep that in mind too. GL!
