Breastmilk from bottles question

If you store your breastmilk in bottles...does the "fat"/cream separate out and stick to the sides of the bottle? ?How can you make sure it gets mixed back in...mine was still all coating the sides of the bottle and I think poor baby got the equivalent of skim milk. ?:-( ?I tried swirling the bottle around, and even scraping the cream off the sides of the bottle with a knife and throwing it back in, but it didn't work so well.

Re: Breastmilk from bottles question

  • Just keep swirling. When you heat it it will swirl back in easier too.

  • Congrats!

I was part of the Spring 2008 1st Tri board with you.  You have always been so supportive and I'm happy things are going well for you.

Yes, my fat sticks to the side of the bottle.  I usually let it sit out about 30 minutes and then either freeze it or heat it up and feed him.  I swirl it around and tip the bottles all sorts of ways to get it to reabsorb.  Oddly, when I have it in the cooler bags with Ice and drive the 2 miles to my moms house, in the 15 minutes it takes to load and drive it's all better.

It always mixes out when warmed up.  I do scrape at times when I am freezing to just get it all in.

  • Hmmm...I give them cold to daycare and they heat them. ?I guess I'll have to store them in the same bottles I give to daycare instead of in storage bottles.

  • run it under water and swirl, it mixes up as you warm it.

  • Most daycares I've heard of make you bring bottles ready to be fed with nipples on and all. They should know how to "mix" and warm a BM bottle, but I would check with them to be sure. It will seperate while in the fridge at daycare so they definitely need to know how to swirl it.

I pump right into the bottles we use for feeding. I keep what is needed for the next day or two in the fridge and any excess goes into freezer bags for later.
