Switching DD to soy today: update and questions

Some of you might remember my posting over the past few days about DD having diarrhea when I switched her to NextStep formula from Gentlease. We saw the pedi today for her 12 months visit and we discussed her history (started have runny poops daily when I switched her to FF at 9 months. I can't have dairy, so it wasn't in my diet while BF).

Pedi said it might be a virus because DD is still having diarrhea after my switching her back to Gentlease on Monday... but because of the runny poops regardless, and because every time she has a bottle she's had diarrhea since Saturday, regardless of the formula type, we're switching her to soy for now.

Pedi also said that if it is a virus, soy milk is sometimes recommended anyway because it's easier to digest then milk.

So that's the update for now.

My questions... If your DC is on soy milk, what kind do you use? I'm assuming you get plain (not vanilla flavored)? I bought Silk plain today.

DD completely rejected the straight soy milk today (first bottle) so I did 4oz formula to 2 oz soy and she took that ok. How quickly did you wean to soy and how easy was it?

TIA!

  • DS was on soy formula for the majority of his first year, but then I switched to regular formula to ease the constipation.  We are back on soy and have been for about two months. He does better on soy, except constipation (I give him probiotics for that).  We use Good Start soy formula still and Silk soy in the purple container for kids. Make sure you get that one because it is vitamin fortified, which is what soy lacks vs. milk.  It is also vanilla flavored.  DS prefers the formula to the silk, so we do both still.  DS has other issues because I think he is intolerant to dairy and/or wheat.  I have taken both out of his diet and he did better, but then the ole grandparents derailed that one night.  DS hasnt been tested for allergies yet because Dr wanted me to remove dairy from his diet before the blood tests because apparently alot of blood test come back false positive, showing more allergies than what children really have.  From what I have researched, if DC has a dairy allergy it is also likely they have a soy allergy (great, huh), so we will see.

  • DS is on Silk Soy milk as well, just the plain. I saw they have the kids one but I wasn't sure b/c it was vanilla flavored.  He was allergy tested and was allergic to milk and will be retested when he's 18months so I'm hoping it goes away and we can switch to regular milk. At which point I don't want him to like the "flavored" milk and not drink the regular. I'm going to ask Pedi. at his next appt.

We weaned from soy formula and he took to it right away. I never mixed, just offered the Silk in his sippie cup and he would get the formula in a bottle for a month or so. He's no longer on any formula . He gets one bottle of Silk a day in the AM. But all day long he drinks Silk from his sippie.

  • Thanks guys. Mauid, I didn't know they made kid stuff! I didn't see any at the store we were at.. maybe I'll check our Whole Foods or something. I'll call the pedi and see what they say. I did make sure to buy the kind that was fortified w/ calcium and some other vitamin though, which is how I ended up choosing Silk.

The pedi didn't mention anything about getting DD tested but maybe I'll see about getting a referal. I know they say it's not as accurate at this age, but maybe when she's 15 or 18 months. It would just be nice to know and take the guess work out of it.

  • DS is also on soy.  I just switched him two days ago.  I gave him the purple silk kind as well.  I just went cold turkey - no more bottles - all soy milk in the sippy cup.  He has done great!  I may try to offer him whole milk this weekend to see if he has outgrown his allergy.

  • When I had to give soy to my oldest I gave her the Silk Vanilla. She actually loved it.
  • We do the silk soy plain, not vanilla mixed with some rice milk.  Both are organic, vitamin fortified and calcium added.  You could try warming it, if you aren't already.  Mine would only drink it warm and we've gradually been working down to cold.
