Feeding Tube = Heightened Gag reflex

Anyone else have LO's with feeding tubes?  After they had the feeding tube put in did they have a heightened gag reflex?

Re: Feeding Tube = Heightened Gag reflex

  • what is the rate? It could be to much on their bellies.
  • Did they have fundoplications (another procedure, to prevent reflux/vomiting)? ?That can cause gagging.

?In general, I don't hear people complain of gagging after g-tube placements, but as pp said, it could be caused by a new formula, too high a rate, other variables with the pump feeding.?

  • Has oral aversion ever been an issue for them?  It might be something to ask a feeding therapist about.
  • Hi Ladies,

    Sorry for the delayed response.

They have GJ tubes where their feeds are pumped into their intestines instead of their stomachs.  We only use the G tube port for small doses of medicines.  Oral aversions are an issue since we had the NG and NJ and now GJ tubes put in.  But now that nothing is going past their nose and into their stomachs they shouldn't have any gaging.

  • Even though the NJ and NG tubes are gone it may have something to do with the time they had them in the hospital.

I can't really say for Olivia since she does have a fundo and a gtube.    She does have a very strong gag reflux.  It's part of the reason why she doesn't eat orally - the 2nd food gets even near the back of her tongue, she wil gag and then look like she's chocking.

It's probably something that you're going to just have to keep working on slowly.
