Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Just want to vent and have a question (Long)

I am so upset.  I have been BFing DS for a year.  My goal was to get to his birthday (tomorrow - eek).  Last week I decided that I wanted to keep going, just eliminating the daytime nursing sessions but keeping the early morning and bedtime sessions.  I spoke with a LC (plus some encouragement from some of you lovely ladies!), and then 2 days later I became horribly sick.  Needless to say, my supply has tanked.  I have been pumping to try to build it back up, but now it seems that DS is on a nursing strike.  He refuses to nurse, he even cries and pushes me away when he sees my breast!  I am not sure why, but I am so heartbroken over this.  I'm not sure if I should even bother continuing with the pumping, since he turns one tomorrow.  On the other hand, I have not been able to introduce cow's milk yet because DS has been sick also (diarrhea for 7 days now), so if I don't pump, I won't have anything to replace those nursing sessions that we were still having!  I am running out of frozen BM and I can barely pump enough for one 5 oz bottle per day.  I just don't know what to do.  Should I just introduce the cow's milk anyways?  And if so, should I just do it cold turkey?

  • DS was formula fed and when he turned 1 we tried to do milk cold turkey but he wasn't having it, so I've been doing 1/2 formula, 1/2 whole milk bottles and it's working just fine.  Maybe you could do the same with BM?  Then eventually reduce the amount of BM you use until he's on a full milk bottle.  That may help ease him into it a little better.  HTH!!

  • Thanks!  I will try this.  Do you think it would be OK to try the cow's milk even though he is having diarrhea still?  (sorry if TMI)
  • whole cow's milk has constipated our guy, so it might actually help in your situation!

And I went through exactly what you are going through at 4 months. I was down to nursing twice a day after going back to work and then I had a very high fever for a week. Needless to say, the milk was gone at that point and Adam refused to try.
